I'm looking to fit an aftermarket steering wheel, without an airbag, without taping over the light what's the best way to get rid of the light coming on.

Read you can fit a 2.2 ohm resistor?

Yes you just need a 2.2 ohm resistor.

Is it quite easy to fit? Just plugs on the end?

Yes just plug it in the 2 sockets you'll find in the connectors, can use some electrical tape to make sure it doesn't move.

Thanks, can you do the same thing when fitting new seats at all?

Good tip I need to sort my airbag light out now after all this rain and a leaky sunroof.

Yes,just plug in the resistor if you fit an aftermarket seat with no airbags,if you don't have airbags in the seats you still need to plug in the pretensioner wire otherwise just use a resistor for that too.

I think I have some resistors spare you can have.....if I find them obviously.

I'll get back to you.

Anyone point me to a link for the right one??

Done a search on eBay and I'm confused as which one to get

If you find them, and no one else does I'll be happy to take them off your hands

fixed. Good luck :y:

Yep,ideally you want to remove the airbag ecu too.

some said apparently you can get away with it but you need to remove the entire airbag loom.

These are the ones I used

Got them from Maplins

Used on airbag and seat pre-tensioners

Still have 2 left ;)

Did you remove the whole airbag unit as well like above?

Nah, this one is the trick to make the airbag loom believe that the circuit is closed, so the airbag light shows up on your dash then turns off. It's either you trick it with a resistor, or you just remove it altogether and it never appears on your dash.

Perfect, that's what I need. My football manager runs a garage and he said it will pass MOT as long as it come on at start up like it should then it goes off

Hmm,if you fit an aftermarket steering wheel so you remove the standard airbag and the light still works as usual, which means the vehicle should at least have an airbag, you won't pass an MOT.

I used the same resistors for my steering wheel and they work a treat.

They do work I did exactly the same for my airbag light. I bought mine from maplin it's two wires cut apart under your steering wheel you use the resistor in the middle. Easy jobs take 5 minutes.

what resistors did you use? i tried 2.2 and 3 ohm and neither worked at all.

having spoke to an mot tester, it now turns out that if you completely remove the airbag edu - so there is no light on whatsoever - and change the wheel, it will still pass!

Try a 2.2 ohm fused resistor, you might get the Watt value wrong.

I used a 2.2 ohm standard resistor from maplin

I had the usual airbag light on issue, and car was due mot at start of the week. I removed the airbag steering wheel, disconnected the airbag ecu so the light didnt come on the dash, and fitted my old 106 momo. The car FAILED mot! I'm in N.I and mot centres over here are government ran. Tester brought up my car on DVLA system screen, and spec stated car had airbag, so car has to have working airbag light system and all airbag parts (including airbag steering wheel) originally fitted, still have to be present.

Needless to say, airbag steering wheel going back on today, and will have to take a trip to maplins hmmmmm

Did you try to go to a normal garage?

They don't have 'normal' MOT garages in NI. It's government ran. Much better and more controlled than here in England in terms of getting unroadworthy crap off the roads, but much harder to get things like this through even if the rest of the car is perfectly safe.

The airbag light needs to come on and it'll go out itself after a couple if seconds. It's like a self check. If your light doesn't come on and then go out you'll fail. Leave the ecu in and stick resistors in all the plugs. No way you can fail then because your airbag system does it's startup self check and shows it's 'working fine'.

Mine passed.

I suppose it depends how anal the tester is.

If i did not misunderstood your post this wouldn't work if you fit an aftermarket steering wheel,if they see the airbag light come on and then off they would know that there should be an airbag there in the first place.

Mot fella told me, they know if airbag steering wheel is missing, they know the airbag test system has been fooled, hence the fail! Ive a maplin resistor inline behind the airbag wheel, and light now going out after about 3 seconds, so hopefully mot boy happy next week! Mot stations definely easier on mainland! :boxing:
