Hi just bought a ps3 for 5 quid off facebook. But the owner says the power cuts out after half hour. What would i need to replace to resolve this issue?. Looked on google but no one really says what causes it apart from overheating. Only cost a fiver so no big loss if cant fix. Any ideas?? Cheers

Just got it back home and tested it. There is no yellow light coming on. It loads up to the menu then beeps and goes off. then the red light just keeps flashing until you press power again then comes on then same again. It stutters a bit on startup. Could this be a hard drive issue?.

Power it up then hold the power button till you hear three beeps (takes a while) then it will power off, turn it back on and it will set up like a new ps3. Had to do it to mine and lost my 70% completed gta v :wall:

Just tried this and it only beeps twice then powers off. Its still going off aswell. Ive got another ps3 which had to have a new harddrive and that made it power off. Might try another hard drive.

Sometimes the heat sink comes away from the the main board as the boards can be prone to bending a little. My mate used a heat gun to bend the board back to the correct shape, then put the heat sink back on with a little cooling paste that can be had for about 50p. Worked for a couple of years.
Might not be the issue but worth a shout.

Ok cheers im taking it into a computer shop tomorrow so will mention this. He does all the pcs at my gf work so hopefully will do it cheap. Whats the most you lot would chuck into it?. About 20 30 quid?.

Just pull it apart yourself, clean it up, put it back together and see if that fixes it, could be a dodgy connection or anything, does the fan kick in?
aldred309uk
13th April 2014, 17:33
It's it fat, slim or super slim?

Its in the shop for now. But when i did turn it on it beeps then goes off. Then the red light just flashes. Think the fan worked ok. I recon its been kept in a cabinet or not been ventilated enough and overheated. Ive looked on ebay for parts and theres loads already taken out and tested. If i do it myself with a bit of help from google it should be a cheap ps3.

Did you take it to a pro to fix or try yourself? If ya did take it to someone what causes it?
L33h
14th April 2014, 17:45
Fixed it myself. Looked everywhere and it seemed to be caused by the 2 processors on the motherboard coming away. If you get a heatgun on em for a couple of minutes then put it back together then itll work for a few hours but then go off again... and again lol

do NOT under any circumstances go near the motherboard with a heat gun. It's a very temporary fix.
I got mine professionally re-balled for £50, that included a new GPU.
If it powers up then off straight away, it probably has a fan fault and thinks it's overheating.
Either that or someone has been at it with a heat gun already and not applied paste correctly etc or some other hardware fault.

Pull it apart, heat the board for a few minutes at 300° then let it cool, put it back together and it should work. Then trade it in at game, I've done that for a few. Tell them you want one with a lower wattage!

Good idea how would i heat it to 300° the oven?. Wouldnt i melt the chips or whatever else thats on the board. I have a soldering iron could i do anything with that to sort it?. Cheers.

Also do game do a straight swap for consoles?. I take it they do a warranty for the poor sod that buys the fucked ps3?. Lol
aldred309uk
17th April 2014, 23:33
Use a heat gun, like a hair dryer.
Heat the board slowly, turn over a few times whilst doing it then spend 2 minutes concentrating on the two chips, nice and close, keep the heat gun moving around. Then cool the board gently, drop the heat gun to 100 and just feather it over the board for a little while. Allow the board to cool more then put the console back together.
Game give a warranty with pre owned consoles so the person who buys it from them isn't getting done over. Don't just straight swap for another fat ps3, go for a slim or super slim. Tell them you want a lower wattage console because someone is complaining about how much you're on it and using so much electricity lol!

Cheers i took the ps3 apart lastnight ready for the heatgun today. If i go in and swap for a slim how much extra would they charge?. And have the ones you traded ever not worked when got to shop to trade. Just thinkin ill look a right tit if it goes off when they test it lol. Cheers mate.

18th April 2014, 10:01
No, the ones I've done worked at the shop, just do a good heat treatment, the main bit is the two minutes on the chips. Just check it's working one you're done, factory reset it then you're laughing!

18th April 2014, 11:40
Ok cheers ive borrowed a heat gun but it aint got temp on it just min and max setting
shall i just whack it on full?. If this works its a trip to game tomorrow. Will it be a straight swap? I only paid a fiver for the ps3 so worth a shot.
aldred309uk
18th April 2014, 13:43
Go for a middle heat, on mine low is 100 and high is 600 so go for middle pal!
aldred309uk

Just rang game and they only give £10 for one of these ps3s. And sell others for 120 so no chance of trading it with them. Might keep it for now see how it goes or stick it on ebay.

Knew it would work, they tend to fall again after 2-4 weeks but you could redo the heat treatment again!

If it lasts a month id be happy enough for 5 quid. Then ill just do it again. Ive got another ps3 but at my gf house as im always there. So this will do me for home for now. Been on the (fixed) ps for an hour with no issues so far lol. Do you know if any other ps3 motherboards would fit this ps3?
aldred309uk
20th April 2014, 17:50
Not sure, I've heard of issues from motherboard swaps, I'm an amateur but the heat treatment is something I've done to a few

As I said before, I had mine re-balled and a new GPU for £50 all in, and that was 3 years ago.
Totally saves fannying about with all this temporary heat gun pish. You're using the same type of solder, just re-flowing it. Each time you re-flow it, it gets more brittle. So it's a complete waste of time. The heat gun method - as far as I was aware - was only to enable users to back up data and remove discs. It was never intended to be a "fix".
Stick that in your fucking pipes!

I thought about a reball but even thats not a permanent fix so ive read. And id rather spend an extra 30 quid and get a slim which arent prone to this problem. Mines still working lol been on 11 hours 5 of them straight. I bought a cooler pad to hopefully keep it goin a bit longer. Ive had my 5pounds worth out of it already id say. Im thinkin about takin it to money spinners or bulmers see what they give. If its not a bad amount ill buy another ylod one and do same again.

Ahh well I had my reball done 3 years ago now :homme:
It is a permanent fix because they change the solder type :) if it's done properly.
Be wary of the power packs on some of the slim models, they overheat and stop working.

The laser diode went in my ps3 slim, that's what started me fixing the ylod for a mate lol. Had to pull apart my disc drive and replace the lasers and the track they slide up and what spins the disc. Then traded it in for a super slim!

Well the ps3 is still running fine after 2 weeks. except the fan comes on full now and then which gets a bit annoying. But for that price suppose cant complain. Had it on 5 hours straight no probs other night. Ill let ya know when it packs up if it ever does.

The ps3 finally gave up on me lol at the worst time. I went away for couple of days so decided to take that one incase got nicked. Im not surprised it went tho. was stayin in a cabin and fell asleep with ps and heating on after a few beers. Woke up to the ps flashing and about 50°c temp in the room haha. Noticed the motherboard was a bit warped when fixed it this time aswell.
