Basically, I have the money (4K) sitting for the car I'm looking for (Ibiza Cupra TDI).

I have been looking everywhere for these car's and cannot find one over in Ireland which mean's I will have to travel to either Scotland / England. I've been on Autotrader and have seen a few decent one's but there all priced approx £4500, money's not an issue if it's having to add an extra £500 but how negotiable is second hand dealer's over there?

Any input would be great. :y:

Some are some aren't. There are a few factors that affect it... Have they had the car a while and do they want to turn it around to make way for another more profitable car? Is it not their usual type of car etc. Some just wont budge, some are open to negotiation.

Probably best to just come over for a few days and look around, set the amount you want to pay and stick to it. Draw out the cash, dealers like to see the cash in hand, they will be more likely to go to your price if they can physically see your ready to make a deal there and then.

Like longneck says, some you will go to and will be able to slash 20% off the price of a car no problem, might turn up at others who just won't knock £5 off the price of a car.. If it's a desirable car, and they know they can hold out an extra week or 2 and get near to full asking price, they will hold onto it.. If it's a car that they won't be able to get rid of too easily, they will be more likely to knock a bit off, take a small profit and just take it on the chin

Thanks, the car is quite rare and there is only 4 / 5 on Autotrader at any given time as I've been looking since January which is quite a ball-ache, I fucking wish there was one over this side of the water. So, if the dealer know's the car is hard come by it's going to be a struggle getting them to drop the price. :n::wall:

It will be 4K cash I'd be bringing as I need to get it all changed from Northern Irish to UK note's.

It would be a bit of a mission travelling around in England unless I get my friend to bring his car over via boat.

I wasn't aware that Ibiza Cupra TDI's were rare.

Just don't let them see that you want it badly, you have to play it cool.

Dealers don't always necessarily see cars in the same light that enthusiasts might, so even if it is a rare car, that doesn't immediately make it worth more in the trade.

Yeah I was also thinking this and just adding that I'm looking at a few when I come over, they may then think that as I'm looking for a few they will go a bit cheaper as I could easily walk away from the deal.

I'm going to try my best to play it cool, been wanting one for so long though so it will be hard.

I'm just going to have to try and point out all bad thing's on car, if there is any lol.

Most know this trick now.. A lad come to look at my saxo when i had it, and said "Well i have a few more I'd like to look at if i can't get this at the right price" so i just said "you might as well go and see them then, because i've told you my bottom price" and walked off, he came and knocked on my door within 10 minutes and paid what i wanted...

Really?

It's such a joyous car to be driving.

And at just £3995 it's a steal.

Worth a try haha, I'm going to e-mail a few dealer's first and see how negotiable they are in price, if some are non-negotiable then I'll just have to pass on them.

I think it would be best to drive over with my friend instead of flying as the dealer will think "Shit, this guy has came over here via flight, how the fuck is he going to get home" haha". If my friend come's it might make negotiation's a bit easier as he will know I can drive away from deal in my friend's car.

I'd be tempted to give them a ring dude, if they speak to you they'll take you more seriously in my experience. Rightly or wrongly, depending on the dealer, if it's a cheaper car in their stock anyway, they may simply not reply to an email expression of interest at all, assuming if you were serious you'd be going to view and see it.

I reckon you may well get a decent deal on a car if you make the effort as well. If it was me selling, and you came to view the car, pointed a few bits that might need sorting on a used car, and made me a decent offer on it with cash, I'd be much more inclined to sell it to you and strike a deal, than start negotiating with someone over email who's asking about money off before they've even seen the car.

I'm not for one minute suggesting that's what your circumstances are, but car salesman have to deal with timewasters all the time, and they don't know you from them until you're there showing a serious interest.

I see what you mean, it probably would be better giving the dealer a ring and just explaining the situation to see what they advise. Thanks:y:

Unfortunately, it's not what I'm after but thank's. There's a lovely red FR an hour away from me which was tempting but my heart is set on the Cupra model.

If you have been looking since January then you are not looking in the right places.

These cars are not rare, and you can easily pick up a good 1 for less than £4k.

You don't know if he's after a specific car though, that's quite a sweeping statement to make.

He may be after a low mileage car in a particular colour.

Basically, I'm speaking about Ireland in general, I can guarentee you that you will not find one over here as I've tried numerous times.

I'm also on the look out for one that's 2005 upwards with less than 90,000 mile's and in good condition as they have a arch bubbling issue.

I guess you haven't done much research if you think they're not rare, there is four on Autotrader at the minute: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/northernireland/search/used/cars/seat/ibiza/postcode/bt488nj/radius/1500/keywords/cupra/price-from/3000/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew/fuel-type/diesel/price-to/5000/sort/default

Yes but has also said about coming over to Scotland/England with a budget of £4k. Which would get him 1 that fits the bill.

IIRC they only done them in red, black and yellow. And you don't wan't a yellow 1, which leaves red and black, which are also ten a penny.

I've tried Gumtree, UsedcarsNI, Pistonheads, UTV drive. :y:

I'm looking for one with warranty also as I don't want to be sold something that's fucked by the time I get back to Ireland.

I've been burned a few time's with car's and really don't want to be wasting 4K.

As for warranty, well, dealer warranties aren't worth jack shit, and the extended warranties they offer, well, i wouldn't entertain them either.

Buy a good 1 from a private sale, and stick your own warranty on it.

What nik said, private garage warranty isn't worth shit.. Plus if you come to england for one, what happens if it breaks, gonna bring it all the way back here on their request to fix it?

Much better off buying privately.. You will find a lot of dealers just stick an MOT on it with no test and such.. If you buy from a person, you can see how genuine you are they day you meet them, where as a dealer makes his money on a false face!

By contact, do you mean email? If so, RING THEM! One of my friends always does this, emails people and doesn't get a reply and just gives up.. Why wouldn't you just ring and have an answer there and then?

I suppose you have a point there, trying to be cautious just as I went to Scotland 4 weeks ago as my friend was getting an A6 which shit itself the night we got it back.

So basically, a private sale and sort out warranty when I get back would be a better plan.
