had a small engine fire the other morning. Thankfully I had an extinguisher in the car.

Driving along the motorway, a whir turn into a loud buzz before something when poof, something went and then I coasted onto the hard shoulder in a plume of smoke.
Im busy on site at the minute, so when I get back to my car, what should I do?

I noticed a bit of oil down the back of the engine block, should I Lift the engine out, or should I Take the rocker cover off have a look?
Or is there anyone in the Barnsley area/ penistone region thats good with engines at all?

What would have caused the fire?

Oil dripping on the manifold possibly but my money would be on a starter motor being stuck on heating up and the rest you know.

It was down the back of the engine block. Didn't appear to be any oil on the exhaust. Was under the plastics of the injectors. 1.6 vtr engine mind you. :S

Edit : Looking, at google pictures, could possibly have been that... Any other ideas though?

Edit Edit :
what Would that cause smoke to whisp out of the breather tubes, and the oil cap when I took it off?

Was the smoke thick and acrid?
It could be oil leaking from a gubbed cam cover gasket but by the sounds it sounds like somethjng a little more terminal. I take it that it doesn't run anymore?

There probably might be lights on the dash if I hadn't taped them all up...
New engine time??? Or would you whip head off and repair damage?

fuel leak

the whir/buzz is your fuel pump working overtime as its not pressurising the rail anymore.

are you sure the fuel lines to the rail are secure, not leaking, or, the rail isn't leaking anywhere at the point of injectors or fuel return?? worth checking as that's the only thing I could think that could cause a fire near there

it dosent sound internal, the misfire has no nasty sounds to go with it apart from the usual soundtrack.

I had a fire under my vtr once because of oil on the manifold, but it was tiny, that's when I blew a hole in the side of the oil filter housing.

Ahh, that sounds promising then. Hmmm, i'll have a gander tomorrow morning 1st light.
If they are secure and everything is as it should be, any other possibilities?

post some pics... id say youve more then likely had a fuel leak somewhere..but pics of the damage will help work out where/why/whether its savable

check EVERYTHING related to the fueling, the only thing on the back of the engine is; air inlet, injectors/rail etc, and a water pipe, and theres a small bit of loom that runs behind there;

But, the only thing behind there that can cause a fire is a; fueling or the wiring.

Check the hoses for the fuel return, and fuel supply to the rail, check for splits especially in the hoses (aren't the hoses plastic with stupid plastic connectors on the end??)

check the rail for any leaks or cracks (i.e clean it with a rag, then turn car on) if it is leaking or a slight crack, then it will be wet somewhere.

Check injectors where they seat to the rail, if the seats (rubber rings) aren't seated properly or aren't sealed they will spray fuel up, also check on opposite side where they meet the cylinder head

Only things I can suggest tbh, unless you have brake fluid leaking from the reservoir? check that.. it needs allot of heat to make brake fluid catch fire as its not a combustable fluid... but its a possibility as said before.. oil whent on fire on my car, so it could happen.

Holy hell, didn't expect that

From the video there was no sound to even consider thinking a rod would have flew out the side of that, usually you hear a loud tinny/metal scraping sound (best way to describe it lol)

Atleast a 1.1 engine is easy to replace, your better off banging in a vtr engine if your replacing it, cheaper and for more power lol

There's a VTR lump in it atm, God bless 8V engines. :D :P
