View Full Version : Audi S3 2007 Progress.. 430bhp+ Build

Hello again Sax-p!

Back again, hopefully this time I won't encounter another problem with a car eh.

Upon advice, and mostly jealousy of Ross taking me out in his Audi RS4, I had to take a look at the S3! After test driving a few cars, a Golf R32 didn't quite cut the mustard up against this. It took a few attempts to get a S3 with the seats that I wanted, but my god, it was well worth the wait!

Here's some pictures of todays progress, its first partial clean and polish. I had my bitch do this for me, thanks ross

As you can see, the paintwork needed help when a light is beamed onto it.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/B2242F5D-251F-4E86-89AD-DCFEEE7A3A87.jpg

The exhaust hadn't seen any cleaning products since it was put on the car too.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/A82DDE33-2D0B-4A9D-B4D7-BC6D2CA448E6.jpg

A bit of elbow grease later and it came up quite well, needs more but not bad for a 10 minute attempt.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/E0ACFD04-E87A-4391-9535-58FD3AC50B42.jpg

Ross got to work on the polishing, only the front end was started today, needs a couple more days of TLC to be spot on.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/C9858AA5-7CB6-4AEB-BDCD-498F04A22F40.jpg

Not a bad result of the first stage of polishing to be honest.

Engine bay came up well too!

That's enough for now anyway.

Plans;

Refurb alloy wheels, a Gunmetal grey colour.
Full detail on the bodywork.
Number plates need changing.
Canbus LED's on number plate lights, sidelights and DRL's, maybe the interior too.
Double din 7" Display screen headunit

I'm sure as I go around the car and pick fault, a lot more will be added to the plans. The old girl needs some TLC. We had a quick go at the seats before time was up, but I'm really pleased with this purchase!

That poor cunt doing all that work whilst you watch! Anyway - thanks for fixing my compressor bro :D

On a serious note, car looks great on the front end now - we just need to finish the rest! Looking at the photos I can't believe how bad it was!

More to come next week bro - let's crack on :)

Ps - add a miltek to your list you know you want to...

Can Dom buy a decent car?

Will his lass kick off?

Will Ross' engine blow up post 100K miles?!

Tune in next week for another thrilling episode of.... Dom's Auto Traders!

why wont the bonnet open? My a3 wouldnt open other day, popped it and wouldnt do much, the clip under the bonnet had seized so just sprayed wd40 in there and jobs a good one

Ross
27th April 2014, 22:19
It's probably seized (and my fault) - forgot to regrease it after jet washing bay. I actually made a mental note to regrease but completely forgot. Dom - there's the issue :)

Cheers Yates - good shout.

The indicator thing seems odd, not something that can just happen to go wrong with a car. Has it been fucked with?

Not a clue, only had the car a couple of days, hoping it's just a relay or something minor, only noticed it after getting flashed quite a few times on the M1. I thought they were letting me out.

I genuinely hope it works out for dude, you seem to be kissed with death as far as cars go.

Feel free to disregard / ignore / tell me to fuck off, but I have another mate in a similar situation, you must be up to your tittays in debt for cars now surely?

Why would you ever sell that?!

OP nice car - I'd definately want a flat bottomed steering wheel on that list of mods. I want one of these soon but with the dsg/s-tronic box.

Cos I'm a douche and it was DSG. Had 170mph on the autobahn. Still pulling as well.

These really are good all rounders.

OP - make sure the cam follower has been changed and also that the haldex service has been completed!

Thanks for the comments gents, it really is an amazing car.

Got it back this afternoon, and my god it put a smile back on my face on the drive home.

Bushy, why the hell did you get rid of that beauty?!
Why does the cam follower need changing? And what the hell is a haldex service?

I got rid because I'm a complete douche! I'll have another one day. Preferably sprint blue.

Haldex service is the Quattro system. Effectively a filter and fluid change. Should be done every 40k. Google S3 cam follower - they wear which in turn cam wear the lobes on the cam. Mine was pretty worn through at 35k miles.

It affects all the 2.0tfsi lumps! If you need any advice or anything just shout.

I timed mine to roughly do 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Bare in mind that was with launch control and it's DSG!! Used to eat M3's for breakfast.

Id say in anything other than perfect conditions it's the quickest point to point car for reasonable monies!

Oo, I'll give Epsom Audi a call tomorrow and see what the previous owner had done. Thanks for the heads up.

Agreed, I had a play with an R8 on the way to Ross's house the other day, it wasn't pulling away from me. Despite the massive BHP difference, it wasn't going anywhere!

mattknight1984
29th April 2014, 19:31
How many miles does yours have?

Struggling to find a DSG with decent miles, right seats, nav and the flat bottomed wheel for less than 15k...

Dom
29th April 2014, 19:35
97k.

I can't find any with all I wanted on, so I settled with the seats over the Sat Nav, wasn't concerned with the steering wheel. Payday will bring in a Double Din aftermarket headunit, think of it that way ;)

These engines are good for stage 2+ all day long. Easy 200k on them no worries. Just make sir sit has good history!

The only thing to note as these are direct injection the valves 'coke' up! Google that as well!!!

Oh I know of the Coke problem, Ross was telling me about it on his RS4, but then again I haven't got the £££'a to sort that problem anytime before the end of summer. I'll come across that bridge when it comes to it, thanks for the advice though :)

If you were sticking to an R8 you probably aren't coked up, or he wasn't giving it the beans.

Get it rolling roaded and then you'll know for sure!

Nice choice Dom

Got same engine in my TT!
Mine is DSG and now I'm stage 2 it flies.

I enjoy just having a relaxed drive more than often now or days, when it actually comes put the garage. But it's great to know the power is there!

Like Bushy said earlier get cam follower checked, they're normally not a problem up it from the price of the things get them regularly changed!

Seats are the only thing I couldn't find spec wise on mine, but I've got over that for now I hope.

Good luck with this one!

Did a bit more polishing on this last night - there was an area on the drivers lower door half that was quite matt and it came up AMAZINGLY well. Like a fucking mirror! We're attacking this like my RS4 - a couple of panels at a time but it's responding really well. really starting to look lovely :)

Dom

Updates..

As Ross just explained all pretty much, we've been attacking this car panel by panel. The paint was absolutely awful, it had been through more polish people than hitler did, fact.

Luckily enough, 3 evenings work, takeaways and gay movie nights has brought the paint up quite well. Here she is as it stands tonight;
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/5440A5AB-CC6E-41FB-9C45-CDFE4F72CFBA.jpg

... And as I arrived home, a bird torpedo'd my bonnet. Again.

Anyway, I don't get much time to post due to work, will post pics over the next couple of days.

If I'm honest, exterior mods are the last things on my list at the moment. Ross and myself will be tinkering with the interior audio next week at some point, along with cleaning up the exterior.

After money becomes freely available, and time too, I'm hoping to find a Miltek Exhaust to make rather loud noises ;)

S3 Fwend!

Looks a lot better after the rotary, I desperately need mine doing. I'd check the Haldex & cam follower pretty sharpish as its not expensive to sort them both and will save you a boat load of money in the long run if either does go tits up. Its worth just doing the Haldex oil & filter anyways regardless, its about £70 for the oil, filter & the tool.

I'd be a little weary of using a Miltek, especially a used one as quite a few of them seem to crack. I'm going for a BCS system on mine, they seem to be better built and they are cheaper.

BCS cheaper?
I got quoted £1350/1500 for mine??? So there shouldn't be much difference. Ill be keeping my Scorpion with that price.
That being said the BCS systems do seem like real quality workmanship.

I finally have an AUX port!

Okay, you read it, nearly £12k's worth of car and it doesn't have an
AUX port. Not to worry, between Ross and myself we plumbed one in.

After ordering a bit of kit off eBay it turned out to be the wrong one. We chopped the plug off and by using the wiring diagram we hooked it into the Stereo. Ross then plugged in the laptop to programme the radio to pick up the Aux input by pressing CD twice.

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/07D2608B-0E6B-4AAC-B096-858DA873C019_1.jpg

It works!

& then it stopped working on the way home, only works if I push the stereo inwards, presuming loose connection. Nothing a new mould of a plug won't sort. Until I save enough for an RNS anyway.

Other then that, a pretty cool pic of when Ross revved his V8 with my car behind it. Ah the v8 noise <3

This is the one we should have got - be careful with which head unit you have as we actually ordered the wrong connector and had to modify it heavily - which is why I think we now have a loose wire... :(

Here's what we SHOULD have ordered (Dom currently has a Concert 2):

Are you leaving the centres silver?

Ross
3rd June 2014, 12:56
I'm sure Dom will post soon but the centres caused a lot of headaches lol. The way they look now I think is great - they have an outer part like a clamshell kinda shape, a chrome ring, then an inner circle with the audi rings on them.

Dom had a huge headache trying to figure out what to do as you can't take them apart. Ended up masking off the entire inners (chrome inwards) and spraying the clamshell bit.

It honestly looks really good as it sits - the only other thing possible would have been to try and somehow extract the chrome ring and audi logo, and spray the rest, but it would have been an absolute nightmare - seriously - and I'm not sure it's even possible. We really studied it for some time.

Poor Dom had a hard enough time chosing a colour at 08:30 lol

Dom
3rd June 2014, 17:29
As Ross said, the Centre caps were a painstaking task, I had to mask up the chrome. The choice was to leave them alone, spray the whole centre cap or do what we have done to them. I chose this option and if it pisses me off, to mask up just the Audi badge and spray again;
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/A38A6006-07C6-4D81-B511-25D340DCF3D9.jpg

The next thing on the agenda was the number plate lights, Ross got me a present after ripping off ze polish.

You don't just clean an Audi..

Had to take a day off work for this, the original idea was to roll around Ross's house at 9am, start the car cleaning and get onto polishing the car in his garage, finishing at 5pm so I could do my police application and head to the gym.

How it really happened, I took a day off work, woke up at 12.30pm, drove over to Ross's in a hurry, spun the fuck out of the S3 still half asleep, sat and played Call of Duty for a couple of hours before getting to work on the car, and even then we watched the Hangover 3.

Oh, and Ross's Xmas present to me, was a mug with his name on it. Cunt.

Easy enough. Then Hoovered, cleaned windows, exhaust tips metal polished. Took the wheels off, please bear in mind the wheels were only cleaned an hour before, road shit, brake dust and all other crap was still sticking to them! Ross pulled out the acid and we set to work.

Pretty pleased with the results for a basic wash. Now the interesting bit, I've come across money to spend on this car, service is needed ASAP. Being plagued with a misfire on the 4th cylinder for months now!

Luckily enough Beaniemoo done the Cambelt and Water pump back in September so that's a weight off my mind, top work btw guys! Gives me peace of mind to go and spend money on power and performance.

Milltek exhaust, filter, remap are on the definite list. Oh, and some rear tyres to keep my arse planted instead of facing the wrong direction on a slip road. I want to see at least 330bhp.

I've got my heart set on lowering the car, but I dread to think what else will fail as a result, the suspension has been feeling very tired lately. I would hate to open up a £2k bill just for suspension mods. All this needs to be done before April, this car will be making its way to the Nurburgring (second time lucky).

I will get a good chance to see how bad it handles at Cadwell in February, I hope it makes it through that test.

Surely if it's feeling tired and you've already managed to spin it, you'd be better spending your money sorting the suspension out and getting some decent rubber fitted rather than worrying about upping the power?

MJ05LLY
15th November 2014, 12:45
Your rears should not be spinning at all unless your on really greasy roads/ice/snow.
I aint read it all back, but I believe your on standard power, so as soon as your fronts start to slip which is always possible it can only transfer 50% of power to the rear unless you have an aftermarket Heldex unit on.

Worth while checking the fuse for the Heldex unit, and giving the car a full scan to make sure all is working fine and no mechanical problems (faulty coupling etc)

Also the diff's need their oil (and filters if it has one) changing every 30 or 40k. Worth while checking that this has been carried out.

Regarding changing tyres, if all your tyres are diff tread depths it throws the 4wd system out and makes it pretty useless. So worth while making them all equal.

I'm running 330ish and I get no spin what so ever, even with launch control. Dont forget uprated clutch if you don't have one yet. Anything over S1 normally means an uprated clutch is needed.

I agree in some ways, yes it would be great to sort the suspension if the car was getting hammered on a track, but for a road car I don't mind. Yes it'll see the Ring and Caldwell, but that'll probably be it. I haven't got deep enough pockets to have both done, and power is the priority. Even though it'll end badly.

It was a very wet slip road, being half tired with absolutely shit rear budget tyres was the killer, the front held but the back just said no. The car does have a heavy fault on the 4th cylinder, Ross drove it tonight and it was stuttering when cold, car shaking. The diff will be fine, yes I'll get the oil etc done, but it's not my priority at the moment.

As for the clutch, I'll wait for that to give up with more power. I'm sure it'll take the power at 320ish bhp. Anymore than that and I'll agree the turbo torque will kill it.

We will see anyway. I'll get it to MRC at some point soon. Goodbye any house deposit.

Fair play.

How long have you had the miss-fire issue? That sounds like a key one to get sorted out, is it bad enough to be worthwhile doing a compression test for bore wash?

As above, it's been happening since late August. Unfortunately my ex-fiancé left me in a lot of debt (to the tune of over £14k). The first priority was to pay off the Audi which was in her name, and transfer it over to mine. Finding £3k out of nowhere caused me to leave it until funds permitted again.

Think the compression and all that will be okay, we will see what MRC say.

Take inlet manifold off and make sure there is not a huge carbon build up on your intake valves, I've read that one before
Also read about swapping injectors about as a simple enough trial?

Hopefully it wpont be expensive

Engine is quite common, so plenty of ideas to try out there :y:

Dom

Well, I have an update..

It was booked in at MRC Tuning anyway. The misfire issue got so bad that the S3 couldn't keep up with a Mazda CX5, a 120bhp Diesel MPV. Putting in a full tank of Fuel at Tesco cured the fault, it run perfect for all of 10 minutes. Then it clicked that it was a fuelling issue.

MRC Diagnosed the fault as an injector on the 4th cylinder, at £160 a pop. When they put the car back together, the breather hoses which were glued together cracked and caused it to run lumpy as fuck (previous owner bodge it seems). New set of hoses were put on. Couple of other bits were done, N80 hose being one of them.

We are taking a guess at the running figures of the car with the faults on it, i'm thinking less than 120bhp for sure. With the faults repaired, the car pulled out 268bhp. 3hp up on standard. The engine seems solid.

Anyway, now the interesting part. Due to how much the above has cost me, I couldn't get the Sports Cat Turbo back Resonated Milltek system.

SO.. Now i've had to settle for Decats instead of sports cats, and the non resonated Milltek exhaust system. The performance air filter and the Stage 2 remap.

Well, it'll be loud. & It'll move. I'm hoping for at least 330bhp. I'm picking it up on Monday.

Standard inlet at the minute, will be changing for a Nuspeed (sp?) sooner or later, MRC are also mapping in Launch Control and Flatshift whenever they can fit me in.

I am literally in love with this car again, my problem is now cracking 350bhp, but I need a clutch first, and urgently. The Turbo back Decat Milltek system non resonated system is surprisingly quiet, until at 6-7k revs where it sounds beasty. It's still no V8.

Why was it running so badly?

A major combination of things, the list was as long as my arm. Mainly the injector on 4th wasn't pumping, fuel pump failed, N75 valve was putting on stupid boost that couldn't be mapped, breather hoses were glued together and a couple of other things.

I'm not even sure what I've got in the car at the moment, pending on the price of replacement, I might have to wait until the new year to get it replaced so it's a lot of time to research. My clutch budget took a massive hit after this;

Some cunt slashed 15 cars tyres on my road, luckily didn't touch the Audi, got my Corsa ffs.

Anyway, Launch control and Flatshift will be fun on the S3. Doubt I'll ever use launch control though.

MJ05LLY
10th December 2014, 22:14
I used launch once on mine, was fun. But just wanted to see if it worked more than anything.

DSG doesn't take fun away, its as much fun giving it a few flicks on the steering wheel coming up to a bend and blasting and then just makes life so much easier and better in slow moving traffic.

No manual gearbox operated by man will be able to shift from first to second on that 0-60 sprint as quick as auto

Just wish mine had the 7 speed DSG likes the RS!

I think my next car may be the newer version S3 but possibly in the sportback. There is just something about them!!

Dom
10th February 2015, 19:18
So where did I leave off?

On Xmas day, whilst pissed, Ross messaged me about an RNSE for an S3 on ebay. Due to my state, I paid a heavy wack but in the end it was worth it.

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/824C996C-01C7-4E71-A460-7F43DC1259A5.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/824C996C-01C7-4E71-A460-7F43DC1259A5.jpg.html)

Brings the car up to date a little, installed an AUX to go with it until we get around to installing AppleTV to replace the AUX and use AirPlay instead.

Then we finally got around to the painstaking task of cleaning the car and attaching the MRC badges. Laser level out and bammmmmm;
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/E9B8C0E1-9E71-45A6-9325-610775F57166.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/E9B8C0E1-9E71-45A6-9325-610775F57166.jpg.html)

Job done.

The car was going to make its first track day appearance at Cadwell on the 7th, unfortunately it was called off the day before much to my annoyance, but I think it was a saving grace in the end, the rear tyres were supposed to be changed, but I couldn't get hold of the Eagle F1's for love nor money on the Friday. That evening without any notice the back end stepped out coming onto a dual carriageway, I wasn't driving but it was a heavy wake up call that running budgets will be the death of the car.

The clutch needs to be booked in before April, the first trip to the nurburgring for this car, and I don't want it to finally give up across the English channel.

But...

This wasn't my car, nor was it filmed anywhere near me or anything, to me it looks like private roads. It seems an AMD tuned S3 came up against an MRC tuned S3, very very similar spec to me. The AMD tuned S3 was supposed to have been a rocket, oh yeah.

The 'Garden Leave' update

I've been given a long time off work, and with long times off work I get bored as fuck. So, I cracked on getting this car into a respectable standard. As usual I headed over Ross's to crack on.

Started with the usual clean and polish. Over the past 6-7 months it needed it badly.

Doesn't do full postcodes.
Will get you there though in a fashion. Just need the latest maps possible.

If you can get the mk2 of the unit. You can use bigger memory cards for music. You will need these because to use the sat nav you need the sat nav disc in the only cd slot.

Only bonus is it looks better.

That is the mk2 isn't it? I've got mk1 RNSE in mine its the original one its different to that, no gloss screen surround and the volume & main scroll aren't chrome/silver.

Mine is particularly bad when re-directing because of traffic, like it took us off the Brussels ring road right through the centre of the city :wall:

I thought the mk2 had the different satnav software than the mk1 :(

Nope, they're exactly the same from what I believe. Ive got a Mk2 and its just 5 digit post code.
Its got latest firmware and 2012 maps I think. But for cheap you can get latest maps of the bay for cheap enough. Its not really good and lets the car down, but I guess the RNSE is closing in on ten year old tech.

They're different, put them side by side and use them both to understand how different they are. Screen quality will jump out a mile.

Sat Nav display is quite alright, I prefer it to the usual TomTom/Garmin products. It changes slightly as I drive and gives me the usual indicators on the left side of the screen for turns etc.

I was going for the TTS engine cover, but the intake is a lot different, and I'm still using my MAF sensor in the cover for a few more weeks yet until the new intake is fitted, I've got enough noise at the rear but nothin up front :(

The first layer of paint went on quite shit, so we took the brake cleaner to it and got it off straight away, but it put dribbles behind the masking and dried there. It took me 3 hours to clean it up today;

SaxP banter aside, that's really shitty luck and no fun at all, you must be pretty sick.

Is it definitely valve / piston damage and terminal?

What's the score with getting a car home from the ring? Do you literally just ring Blackie and tempt him with meaty pies?

Yes it's definitely terminal. Myself and Ross took a look, and decided after 5 mins it wasn't worth trying to save at all.

The "But did you die?!" update

Well, only the S3 did. Thursday started great, woke up and left early. Small amount of pit stops due to a dog that didn't like being in the boot of a RS6. Ross pulled over, popped his boot and no dog. My heart sank thinking "Shit, we left him and the service station."..
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/C28BDE0C-FEBC-41A3-9FBE-4E3C09440EDE.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/C28BDE0C-FEBC-41A3-9FBE-4E3C09440EDE.jpg.html)

With Samson sorted, Ross proceeded to remove the car off the German barge's roof & then we set off again.

Arrived in France, spent about 15 minutes before we were onto the clean Belgian roads. Full speed ahead to Adenau!
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/CE378FB3-00CB-429C-8D5E-07F594E852F4.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/CE378FB3-00CB-429C-8D5E-07F594E852F4.jpg.html)

The journey there was great, the closer we got to the destination, the faster the speeds got. I spent a lot of the time chasing Porsche's, 160mph sticking to their bumper, they couldn't get away. I loved the power and grip the S3 was putting down with its lovely new clutch and brand new Goodyear Eagle F1's that went on a couple of days before. Ross on the other hand didn't need to try with the cars on the motorway, still nothing is yet to own the RS6. :n:

That was it, parked up, went out for dinner, done some epic roads and then that was it for the night.

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/FCF63210-EACE-4248-BD70-0174970A6902.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/FCF63210-EACE-4248-BD70-0174970A6902.jpg.html)
The next morning we woke up at the crack of dawn, or in my case, my mrs crack. Breakfast done, full speed ahead and I was looking forward to putting the power down. After a long wait, I got the chance to. Typically this ended prematurely. Later that evening, sudden drop in Oil Pressure and it was game over for the engine, it was a dead stick.

Luckily enough, at 8-9pm at night the only place able to recover me helped me out, we were pretty much outside after going out for a meal in Adenau, and charged me £500 for the privilege. After 3 days, and a lot of fucking around from Green Flag, the choice was made to recover the car ourselves. The guys in the hotel helped me out massively and let me borrow their trailer and Amarok, one of them is on Saxp somewhere? Thanks very much gents.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/A2B025FA-05E3-41F3-8D74-07E8920E7B7A.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/A2B025FA-05E3-41F3-8D74-07E8920E7B7A.jpg.html)

And that's it. Game over. We're going back with a trailer this weekend to recover the car. All costs are being forwarded to Green Flag, and a compensation package will be put towards the rebuild of the car. It was a shameful ending to an epic trip over. I'm pleased I've got the car handling and power delivery to a near perfect state.

I've spoke to Doug at MRC and he is expecting a melted mess of an engine once it gets back to the UK. Hopefully we can salvage some parts, but the Turbo will be cooked along with the bottom end. The rebuild will take time, a lot of expense I expect, and I will hopefully change parts in future to hit the 450bhp mark.

Yes, the damage is that the engine is completely ruined as expected, its got that bad that its really not worth rebuilding at all.

I'm hoping after two months of being off the road, that within the next two weeks I can source and engine and turbo and get this car back to how it was.

Where was the dog then?

Decided it didn't like the boot and jumped over into the back seats for a closer look at the speedo it seems.

I suppose on the brightside, when you source an engine you can upgrade etc before it goes back in. Must have been driving it properly to get it to the state where it's not worth rebuilding!! lol

Howcome Greenflag wouldn't recover you? Luckily I didn't have to use my breakdown (bought through EuroTunnel), but when I go back next year I'll be looking at RAC/Greenflag as they seem abit cheaper as I'm already a policy holder.. but i don't like the idea of using them if they won't recover me :/

I really really have bit my tongue on this one until it was settled. So here goes my long arse story.

Sainsburys are my car insurance provider, and who I upgraded my European cover to include this journey. They use Green Flag as their recovery company, all owned by UKI Ltd.

I upgraded the policy in Dover, the morning we set sail. All okay.

Next day car blows itself to shreds. Phone Green Flag and said what happened, they promised to phone back in a hour with what the next steps are.

Next day rolls around, still no phone call, for all they knew I could have been stuck in Germany on a back road, luckily enough I wasn't. They phone me and interrogate me about the reasons I'm in Germany. Asking if my cars modified, am I participating in off road racing events, accused me of lying about my location when taking out the policy and them TELLING me that the car was already faulty when I took the policy out. My honest and blunt response to that was "I done fucking well to get a seized S3 from Dover to Germany, are you absolutely stupid?". Admittedly after various accusations I lost it. Literally lost the plot. I even said I welcome any inspection on that car to prove its not modified.

Sunday now rolls around, nothing. I'm doing all the chasing and I get no calls back, the claims team dealing with my case (which they escalated as they thought it was fraudulent) have fucked off for the weekend, and are not in until Tuesday.

On the Tuesday morning, the sinking feeling came over me and I had to get the car out of the storage centre, originally the bill was £12 a night, but this time round due to I needed it out on a Bank Holiday weekend, the two/three nights cost me £196. Thanks to the guys staying in our hotel, we got it out. I went absolutely mental at Green Flag, Ross could get me back to Dover but from there I had no way of getting back home, so a hire car was arranged.

I left the car in the hotel with a feeling that i'll have to recover it myself. On the drive to the Ferry I get a phone call, a french person who refused to listen to me, read off the statement on his screen and put the phone down despite me still talking. It simply read "Because your car is heavily modified, Green Flag refuse to recover, and my policy with Sainsburys car insurance/Green Flag is terminated with immediate effect". Luckily enough I expected a statement, but nonetheless, it hit a nerve and again I turned into a fruit loop.

Wednesday morning I hammer down Sainsburys/Green Flag, they admit fault straight away, admitted that even if the car was modified that they would recover it anyway, but they wanted pictures of the car with a Newspaper infront of it showing the date. They said... If I can go back to Germany and get these pictures and recover the car myself, they will re-reimburse me for any costs".. Deal.

So in two days, Ross and myself arranged a trailer, ferry, hotel in Dover for the friday evening with enough room for a trailer etc. In total I run up a £2700 bill. Fuel, Food, Labour and any other cost that went on my card that weekend got forwarded on. & I got my pictures.. Got back to the UK, sent them off, they're happy that the car wasn't modified and they'll arrange the reimbursement.. Oh wait a minute.. another problem.

Sainsburys insurance came back and said they believe I was already in France when I took out my policy. Urgh. I sent in my booking documents. No response. Got an email saying they rejected my claim. Turns out they lost the email in their system (only found that this week).

I appeal, then they see my boarding documents and say "because I had already left my house when I took out the policy, its not valid". I ask them to show me the terms and conditions where it states where I can and can't be when I can take out my policy, "Oh yeah, its on page 13 of the T&C's".. Sweet I said, send them to me. A week later, I got them. Nowhere in the terms and conditions does it state where you can and can't be when you take out the policy. Green Flag and Sainsburys terms and conditions have been flawed in one foul swoop. It however states the countries you can go to that they cover. Winner.

My final letter went in before the bullshit stopped.

I am writing to you, that despite previous attempts, there remains an outstanding debt of £2748.89 stated in the previous correspondents (18th April 2015 & 28th April 2015). This debt was due for payment by Tuesday 5th May 2015, yet no payment has been received.

The debt is in relation to the failure of the service provided by yourselves due to false assumptions over my personal car being modified and then furthermore the location in which I upgraded the policy. I have proved I was in the UK when the phone call was made, and offered to prove the car was in good mechanical condition when it left the UK.

If the sum outstanding is not paid within 7 days of this letter, I will have no other choice than to begin legal action without warning to recover the outstanding debt using the UK Small Claims Court procedure. I will seek to recover the costs of the procedure in addition to the debt above along with my hours that I will have to work on the case.

I have attached my expenses to show the costs of the recovery, including Ross Dagley-Cleworth’s labour over the 3 day period and my labour charged at my ‘out of working hours’ rate. The recovery of the Vehicle (LG57 VAH) from Welcherath, Germany was carried out by us as it was refused by Green Flag as an assumption that the car was modified, which since has been proven false, and the second attempt to recover the debt was again refused as another assumption was made that I was outside of the UK when the policy was upgraded, again since been proven false. Despite the latter, no express clause has been stated within the policies terms and conditions disputing the location. It would be irrelevant as I was based in the UK when the call was made.

As I have recently received an email stating that you cannot find a record of my email on the 23rd April 2015, I have attached a hard copy for your reference. Also please find attached my Data Access Request form, please note I will make a specific reference to Leslie’s comments that customers can take out European cover whilst on the ferry (9/4/2015), and also Jonathan’s comments that as long as I hadn’t disembarked in France, it is okay to take out European cover (4/4/2015 18:30).

I get a phone call to say my claim has been accepted, Green Flag and Sainsburys admit full liability. Turns out they didn't have an express clause stipulated anywhere within their terms and conditions about the location of where you can and can't be when taking out the policy. Nor anywhere in their policies about car modifications. Infact, as I upgraded my policy instead of took out a policy, a lot of the shit they gave me was exempt. I'm expecting a cheque any day this week.

Note for future, even the biggest companies have legal loopholes. Was it worth it? Germany and back in a day. Yes.

I haven't lost a legal battle yet, Leydon Vs. Carshop went to court with the BMW, Leydon Vs. Evans Halshaw about the Astra was settled before court, paid me a full refund on a car I had for 9 months, Leydon Vs. Sainsburys Green Flag, tore into their flaws and job's done. Was it worth the stress? Maybe, but I can see why people give up, depression, upset and anger but the financial gain (despite not making any profit from this) I still get to put some money towards the car repairs.

Seems like an absolute nightmare. I feel for you, every car you buy seems to break or have other major issues. Good luck in getting everything sorted :y:.

Don't worry, I bring these things upon myself. :y:

What a fook about! You do seem to have some shite luck with your cars!

I took out holiday insurance as i was sat on the plane in the airport. £3k bill from mexico paid out no problem. Cant see how they could stipulate where you should be when taking out insurance.

Fuck.

Hopefully you get a few quid extra for the hassle.. reckon the stress would have killed me. Or if not the stress of the breakdown, then the Germany and back in a day!! Hope you got your mate a beer lol.

Interested to see what you do with the S3. Fancy one myself, abit more grown up than a Twingo!

Sainsburys should stick to groceries, looks like a bunch of claims dodgers to me. You know where not to put your money next time.

I'm with AXA, european cover and recovery by default at no extra cost, all you need to do is call them before a journey.

The slow progress.

Its Sunday, and there is nothing else to do than moan like a little bitch on here. The new engine is almost ready to go in. I have a slight issue with a Stem Seal on the head, its only a minor problem but it means stripping the head apart to fix. I need to pull my finger out and get it over to the Engine specialists at some point this week :y:

Unfortunately I need to find a new mechanic to put this all together, short of Ross and myself tackling it over a weekend, I would rather pay someone else a fuck tonne to do it.

The car came back home for the first time in a few months, I'm pleased to see it back, and just needing to buy its new shiny Turbo, and then we're on for a winner.

Parts on the shopping list in the meantime;
Custom Intercooler and Rad set up
K04 Hybrid Turbo
TTRS LPFP & 165 bar FPRV
Intake (undecided on which one?)

I want this to see the road before September, I would love a late trip back to the ring to finish what I started.

We're almost there!

Its been a very busy few weeks. The engine is built, some may have seen on my facebook, but for those who haven't, its whore engine cleaning porn. Thanks to an Aquablaster, it all came up well.

The first decision to make on this build was to scrap all plans and start again from the beginning but with an engine that hasn't imploded before. The decision was to get it built right first time, and to stop cutting corners to try and get the car running.

The second stage of the build was to work out exactly how the last one failed. The penny then dropped, my map didn't have a rev limiter that was friendly. The balance shaft in these engines run twice the RPM of the engine, with a maximum RPM of 14000, thus meaning 7000rpm on the engine. Thinking back to when it all started to go wrong, I was revving very high and my map allowed me to do it.

Ross introduced me to the person who built his massively high spec TU5J4/JP4 engines, who funnily enough is a highly regarded VAG specialist. Winner. So JP took away the engine, and worked wonders on it. Brilliant advice and kept me posted throughout the build.

First problem then, the balance shaft, get it out. JP has done 'something', the reason I say something is because I don't have a clue what he has done, or how he has done it. Using the standard OEM Oil Pump, he's cut out all of the parts for the balance shaft, yet left the OEM Oil pump, welded bits up, and yeah... That's all I know, and all I can see.. But hey ho, it works, meaning I can run without a balance shaft and not having to install the 1.8T Oil Pump set up. Lovely.

Second was the head, stripped completely and sorted the Stem seal issues, and found the reason for the stem seals to fail, the Valve's were cheap ECP valves which didn't sit as well as Genuine Audi parts, the top of the valves were rounded instead of straight cut. So a matching set of valves were gathered.

& Finally its altogether. Race spec bearings, Wossner pistons, Pec rods, new rings and fancy headbolts all that shit that goes along with it. It's a good base to start with.

Now that's all done, we've ordered my Turbo. Ross got on to Craig of TDi Turbo's, Craig has come back with something which is quite simple, I want something with very little lag, yet something that'll scare the shit out of me. Very little information has been given to me other than "Craig is building a 'Take no prisoners' spec".

Based on a K04, Billet Wheel, uprated thrust and .71 coldside. All mine for a very very very cheap price. We shall see when it arrives on Thursday. Even better when the cars up and running by the end of this week. According to Craig, it'll handle 450bhp in its sleep. I will post up a review of the kit once its running.

Next, I've booked the car in at TTS Roadsport, they're local to me as well as they know JP (the engine builder) and know his work, I like it when shit like that ties in together. :y: I'm sure they'll be good, and pull it out the bag. So I've also asked them to fit a Sach's Clutch, Loba HPFP, RS4 FPR Valve and a Forge Intercooler. I am hoping I can take this car to 440bhp, but I'm now restricted by other components but they can be replaced at a later date.

Massive thanks to JP @ JNL Racing, very high standard of work, brilliant results. The only downside, when my engine was being wheeled out, another 2.0TFSI was being wheeled in. I asked what did that customer want building, the response was simple...

"He's got massive nuts and pushing for 600bhp".

Feck.

Turbo's here..

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Domleydon/Audi%20S3/F710A8A1-BBF8-40A6-BC04-44F3DFDD2D5B.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/Domleydon/media/Audi%20S3/F710A8A1-BBF8-40A6-BC04-44F3DFDD2D5B.jpg.html)

I went for a Hybrid K04, and not the obvious choice of the TTE420. Ross who has helped carry out the build with me contacted his Turbo builder (Craig, now of TDI Turbo's) and eventually we went for this spec;
Re-Profiled Compressor Housing
51.00mm Inducer - 62.00mm Exducer & Blade Performance Design 44lbs/min (The largest wheel that we can squeeze reliably into the cover!)
Modified Back Plate
360 Degree Motorsport Thrust Bearing assembly
Bespoke K04 Turbine Wheel with large K16 Trim Inducer & Exducer - Cut Back Blades
Step Gap Performance Turbine Seal
Re-Profiled Turbine Housing to suit larger Trim Turbine wheel
Standard Actuator

Craig decided against using the .71, his preference as the turbo builder to meet my spec of almost Nil lag, but good performance, so I will lose the 4-5bhp but I won't have the extra 1000rpm delay spooling, in which time I'm sure I can be round the drive thru with my double cheese and coffee.

I know a similar turbo with a smaller inducer made 420bhp in South Africa at 2500ft altitude, doing the rough calculations in England at sea level with the same spec engine it could break 448bhp, and with the right mods to match, surpass it. I think from the comments on TFSI owners on facebook, Simon @ TTE doesn't think it'll be capable of coming close to his 420 product. He did ask for an update of when its mapped though.

Engine will be back in tomorrow and run in at some point this week. The next stage to go for is mapping..

Comments and criticism welcome as always.

Awesome to see - the cars with wingback bucket seats like this one are a rare find nowadays. Dom did a great job in modifying this one where needed and keeping it in great condition. Wanted for nothing mechanically 👍
