Citroen Saxo 1.1 First 2001 'X' reg. Windey window basic model.

The car has been sat in the drive for a week not driven. Battery went flat. Recharged it; used for a couple of short trips (under 20 miles each) then it went flat again a few days later. New battery fitted and the car starts. Checked output from alternator - seems OK. The speedo and rev counter are not working, the fuel low lamp is lit; the fuel gauge shows empty, (has 1/2 a tank at least!). Airbag lamp lit as well. For reference the clocks have the later LCD digital mileometer fitted. Noticed the tacho needle moves slightly when the car is started - rises just over '0' and holds there. Engine switched off and it drops down to rest position. So some power must be getting to it; however small.
Searched extensively on here (thanks to the posters!!) and tried the battery disconnect fix several times (left off for 24 hours one time) still the clocks are not working. Left the positive off the battery yesterday and reconnected it tonight to move the car and everything is dead. Stone dead. Not even the courtesy lamp is lit! The battery is new and was not connected! Took it off and refitted the old but recharged battery and it started first time. Clocks and gauge still not working. Put the new battery on the charger and shows only half down and rising slowly. Swapped them back over to test again and the new battery is lifeless when connected.
I've pulled and tested every fuse with a meter; so could it be a bad earth? Run out of options, daylight and patience. Sharpening the axe as I type.

Any suggestions or help please?

Cheers,

Steve.

Right.....

Checked all the fuses again, charged the battery again; (didn't need it!) cleaned and refitted main battery connections to earth (body and gearbox) and passenger side 'A' post earth terminal (E2). Several attempts at leaving the battery off to see if it resets and no joy. But after all the above being done, the speedo now works but still no tacho and fuel gauge is on empty with the low fuel lamp lit. Everything else' all lights, engine, indicators, warning lights and panel illumination all working fine.
I'm starting to think the tacho has failed so may require a replacement clock set. I quite like the VTR clocks with the white dials but not sure if they are a straight swap. Some threads on here say yes, some say a small mod for the tacho is required. Our car is a 2001 1.1 basic with tacho, digital mileometer and centre top fuel gauge. Straight swap or not? Also to keep the original mileage (only 62,000) can I change the tacho from one set to the other, that is to say are they one complete hardwired unit or can you swap out bits of the clockset?
All help appreciated!!

Thanks,

Steve.

As you car is a mk2 clock set then the vtr clock set will fit & work with no mods. The mileage is recorded electronically so if you fitted a clock set with 28k your mileage would read 90k(anti-clocking feature)The mileage however can be set to whatever you like by someone with a laptop & correct software.

New clocks from a Desire spec fitted yesterday; easy job! Now have speedo, tacho, fuel gauge and all warning lights working. :clapping:

Temperature needle stays at cold.......:wall:

The original clocks just had a lamp to show overheating and no temperature gauge. The wiring diagram shows the sender on the engine has two switches - one is a straight switch which obviously operates the overheat lamp on the dash (green wire) and a variable resistance (pink wire). Now I assume that is for the temperature gauge if the car was fitted with one. I pulled the plug off the sender with the engine running to see what happened - the overheat lamp at the top of the temperature gauge lit and the fan came on. So the sender must be working on that circuit but still the gauge didn't move. Correction - when the car is started the gauge moves slightly from rest to the bottom of the scale and stays there. When you switch the engine off, the needle drops back down to rest position.

So what I am asking is - are there two types of temperature sender; is the sender likely to be faulty; or are the replacement clocks likely to have a temperature gauge failure? I do hope it's not the last one.............:rage:

Thanks!

Steve.

:bump:

Do the temperature senders go faulty? The old clocks had no gauge for water temp. but the replacement ones have a gauge in place but it doesn't function although the needle moves a little on start up.

So..... faulty sender or gauges (again!!)

Opinions please!!
