probably popped a gearlinkage off. Have a look behind the gearbox and you'll most likely find a few things hanging off.

yep ive looked there and noticed 2 hydraulic like bars are just hanging around, is this easy to fix or is it hard or so hard i have to get a garage to do it ?

It's piss easy, it's just a case of popping them back on the ball joints. If they have sheered off then buy some new ones and pop them on.
Loads of guides and pictures on here if you search.

As the chompster says, just the linkage rods popped off dude, pop them back on, maybe replace if they're worn. No biggie :)

right back from jacking the car up and looking underneath, all of the linkages are still attached.....

Has the selector ball slipped out?

All 3 rods yes?

the top of the 4's has excessive free play in my opinion, however it is still attached to what i can only describe as a metal plate, however this metal plate can easily pop off the gear box. is it supposed to be loser then a goose, or is it supposed to be rigid, whats causing it to hop off so easily

You're missing the split pin, there should be a split pin to hold that plate onto the selector arm

just to clarify where the top 4 links to the big metal pole thingy ( brain wave use the numbers it has labeled :wall: ) where top 4 links to 1 its secure mount its the other end of that 4 that has a lose plate

Right, so the whole of the bracket (part no. 3 in the diagram) is loose?
That is bolted on and would cause your problem if it's just moving around.

no top 4 isnt connected to 3 iirc.

that is the plate that is connected to top 4 and that round thingy at the top is what connects to the gearbox and will just come off if u use a lil bit of effort as in enough to pick up a medium sized book :L

gotcha, yeha you're missing a split pin. You can see the hole where one should be.
Wedge a nail or something in there and see if you can change gear. If you can then head to a dealer and order the pin.

right tried a nail and it was too small so i got a bolt and it was firm but i tried selecting a gear and its still too loose and can select anything apart from 3-4. the ball on 2 that connects 2 1 is it supposed to be securely locked in the surroundings or is it supposed to slide around ?

Ok, there must be something else wrong as well then.
Yeah, that should have some movement in it, not a huge amount though. give all your linkages a wiggle and see if any of them come loose?
what happens if you try to select 1/2 or 5/R ? does it just not move sideways?

well the ball nearly comes out the other side but it looks like its meant to. well if you try to go to 1/2 you can push it across to that side but it wont chose those gears, it lets you wobble side to side but across the whole gear area if you get what i mean .... nd the same for 5/R it moves sideways but wont go into those gears. its asif it is tiptronic :S

right sorted it back to how it was it was that pin but i didnt have a big enough bolt in there so i stuck a massive screwdriver in there and it sorted it out mostly but i do need to get new parts for it :)
