View Full Version : Saxo 1.1 manifold and cat problem

Ok, so my car failed the MOT today, on emissions. It says:
'Front (cat/pipe) Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases.'
The guy in the garage seemed to think that the manifold and the catalytic converter were one piece, but another garage I rang asked if I wanted both the manifold and the cat doing. Can someone help me, is the mani and the cat one piece or are they separate?
Car is a 2000 mk 2 1.1 (after September if that helps, I know they changed some stuff in September 2000).
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Cheers!
I'm guessing the manifold for the 1.1 is pretty short then?

All of the manifolds are short mate,it's just that some saxo's have the cat under the car meaning a longer downpipe.:y:

Needs lambda sensor, and manifold as well, as well as fitting :n:
I'm not great with cars yet, or else I'd do it but because its for the MOT i'd rather get it done properly than mess up myself, and I couldn't find any new manifold on the internet either

Are you sure it's not just the gaskets leaking? Or is the manifold cracked?

I'd personally doubt a standard cast iron manifold will have cracked, If it is blowing from the manifold it would be from the gasket where it is mounted to the block. Considering your rejection for an mot cert' only states "Front (cat/pipe) Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases" and doesn't mention the manifold it leads me to believe further that there isn't a problem with your manifold. You need to determine which type of cat layout you have, some models had the cat built into the down pipe which fits directly after the manifold, some models have a normal down pipe and the cat under the car before the centre pipe, both of which won't cost anywhere near 200 quid! How do you know your lamda sensor is shagged? I doubt that it is tbh, you'll be able to re use your current one. Personally I'd take it to either a trusted friend who has good knowledge of cars or another garage. It sounds like your being done over! Try having a feel for where it's blowing yourself, start the car open the bonnet, you'd hear if your manifold was blowing as it would sound like a rally car, you'll be able to have a feel around the exhaust mani while it's still cold for any blowing, same with the down pipe/cat/centre pipe.
