have a full brimmed tank of 100RON German V power in the Saxo. A quarter a tank of tesco value in the 106. It has a VTR engine, 95RON is all it deserves

Is it really that healthy to let the car run out of fuel?
Barry123
7th September 2006, 14:47
no not really
but wont do any major damage unless its a common occurance.
I think its worse for a derv as the fuel is also a lube for the engine bits and pieces, therefore if you're out of fuel you start to cause a nice bit of wear...
AdamW

Thought so.....

b alrite 4 the trusty landrover engine, like driving a tank tho compared to me sax
Barry123
7th September 2006, 14:53
yeah should have thought a little bit more about what i just said...
If its out of fuel the engine doesnt run therefore no wear rah rah.
easy mistake
CampDavid
7th September 2006, 15:00
runnning out damages the cat mostly. It also can decompress a common rail injection system on dervs and make petrol engines run lean, causing them to go bang.
You'll be fine though :);)

my petrol gauge wont go lower than just above an empty tank and the light has never come on - coz its broken! lol.
gotta keep a close eye on the amount of miles i do before filling up!

7th September 2006, 15:20
My old man says should never let it get low because you get all the shit from bottom of tank in the pipes n engine! thats a point im on red best fill up
David
7th September 2006, 15:20
Yeah I don't think mine even has a light tbh...

Its a bit of a myth that running it low on fuel is always a bad thing, damage can only occur if you run it right out.
If you run it right to the bottom of the tank you generally get all of the cack from the bottom of the fuel tank going through into the system for the last few miles. This is only a problem if you keep the tank topped up for ages and allow the amount of junk in the tank to build up then send it through all at once, even then your fuel filter should pick it up.

My girlfriends fiesta doesn't. I found that out when I ran out of fuel and blocked the exit at work at 5:29 on a friday afternoon. I looked well cool

i have just before the red i think

so more RON the better then?
hesslevtr
7th September 2006, 17:42
yes but i dont think your going to notice it in a saxo unless its hevely modified
Barry123
7th September 2006, 17:43
not really...
on newer engines there is the potential for improvements
but on the saxo TU engines the benefits a very minimal.
The saxo engine can run on 95RON but they recommend 97RON anymore and you're wasting your cash

you should never let the orange/ red light come on ATALL!! does not do you engine any good!!
i always aim for half a tank and never below!! lol
Barry123
7th September 2006, 17:52
Oh and if you want the real geeky answer to what RON is...
(I dont care if you dont)
Basically the RON number is given to petroleum based fuel and other which describes the amount of energy required to cause the BANG.
Higher the RON number the higher the energy required to cause the bang.
by the way has nothing to do with MORE power.
thats a different ball park all together.

My fuel guage is just above red and I have £150 for 3 weeks to last, so I think it's one full tank and I'll have to watch it then.
I always let my go into red for about 30 miles (ish). Nothing wrong with it doing it, whats it going to do? Never bothered my car.

Build up of algae... no shit... algae can form in a fuel tank, more common on cars left with fairly empty tanks for long periods of time. Anyway that can work its way into the fuel system.

The Westcoast was always fine and VTR has been too, but I'm slightly concerned with how the VTR is running - fuel seems shit lately.
Barry123
7th September 2006, 21:50
fuel from the pump seems shite or engine gobbling a bit too much?

I think shes drinking too much, seems much more than when I first got her.

Barry123
7th September 2006, 21:55
the usual...
tyre pressures
driving style
change in driving habits
remember you were doing a lots of motorways miles on the car when you first got it, might be doing so much now
checked engine oil
Have you put a shitty induction kit on it?
saxx
7th September 2006, 21:57
heavy foot id expect! ive had to seriously change my driving style to get anywhere near what my saxo did mpg wise
my red light comes on 1/4 tank but i never let her get that low anymore........
Luke
7th September 2006, 22:02
I don't have an heavy foot anymore.
I think tyre pressures could do with checking and yeah, it's mostly town driving now anyways. I need to start gearing down more though, thats an habit I have grown out of..
Barry123
7th September 2006, 22:04

Surely the fuel filter prevents the crap getting in as long as it's being replaced when needed.

it can get blocked...
the filter isnt invincible.
a blockage even small can cause a pressure drop past the filter...

i fill my car up as soon as it gets below 1/4 tank. saw the red light come on once and never again!
Danadaman_3
7th September 2006, 23:55
I usually go through about £20 - 30 a week, judging by everyone else that seems quite bad. but i have just cured my heavy foot aswell. Tried driving between about 1800 and 2800 revs for a few days and MPG was a dream so my lightweight foot is staying like!! iv used half as much as normal already this week! :)
let mine go into red before i consider filling. half a tank is all mine ever gets, iv only ever once been over half a tank when i went to alton towers a few week back.

7th September 2006, 23:59

Was on the Red on the way home, only have a few miles so all is good :)
Will fill it up a tad tomorrow!
Baz
8th September 2006, 00:16
why fill it to the top? use more petrol that way :P in like Danadaman all it gets is £10-£20 after about 10 miles of red light driving lol

if ur gonna put the tank on reserve when u next fill up put sum redx in it as well, helps break up the gunk and makes ur car run smoother.
i always get it on the red light, stops gunk building up and less weight better accerlation :p

wont be good acceleration if your engine goes bust though
polo was mistreated by previous owner, lots of pennies spent on it!

why would the engine go bust? as long as petrols in its fine, if its red light or not

Fuel Filter.
Isnt just for show
saxx
8th September 2006, 08:09
if u permanently run crap through your engine it will do long standing damage
may not notice it now but in the long run you will
Barry123
8th September 2006, 08:10
you shouldn't have crap permanently in the fuel though?
saxx
8th September 2006, 08:11
bottom of petrol tank = gunk
empty tank = gunk at bottom
running on empty tank = gunk going through system
and knowing the fisrt class quality good froms citroen i doubt the fuel filter will do very much to stop it
Yates
8th September 2006, 08:15
yeah but if you redline it each time you are using up all the petrol, so you wont get all the gunk at the bottom of the tank, plus as Ads says theres the fuel filter, its there to do a job
CampDavid
8th September 2006, 08:16
A load of crap in here:)
If you run it empty it picks up the crap at the bottom of the tank. This is only really a problem if you keep it above half a tank for agggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssss and then let it drop, even then it probably won't be an issue.
Much more important is to renew filters regularly, use good fuel from a busy forecourt (fuel goes off if its left standing, gets water in it, not good) and maintain the car well.
I always drop mine to sod all, never been a problemn and looking inside my engine its in pretty top nick at the moment considering the work its done

Citoen don't make fuel filters. They are made by third partys, same as all other manufacturers

8th September 2006, 08:28
common myth that running low on petrol will drag rubbish into the engine, hence why a fuel filter is fitted, regular changing of the filter will prevent it getting clogged and any drop in pressure but no crap can really get to the engine. Most crap in the engine is normally from carbon deposits due to combustion blah blah
CampDavid
