laptop help

right my mate at work stepped on the screen and broke it,so he gave it me,he got another one,went to my local computer shop,they said £270 for a new screen,he said or use your monitor,fair enough,right my mate tried to wipe it,now im trying to do a repair,and it wont,so wiped the original install and tryin to reinstall xp,but you need to format first,but keeps getting stuck at 52%,or does it just take ages,any idea's?please.

I reinstalled xp on my old desktop and it took a couple of hours to do....mite just be taking its time at that part...start it running then go away and leave it for a while

I found if the computer went to sleep or shut down after a certain about of time, it caused the program to crash.

Hope that makes sense.

If it shuts down itl crash, it going to sleep should be alright though, well it was when i did it anyways

your cd of xp could be currupt or dirty? just download it from torrentspy website :P

its been on 52% for about 1h30min,its the original xp disc,fed up with it now,gonna turn it off,thanks for the help.

Possible causes I can think of...
CD read error (dirty/damaged CD)
Hard disk fault
Memory Fault
Over-heating

If it always fails at the same point I'd say it's the CD. Try splitting your hard disk into 2 partitions and install on the second then see if it fails at the same point (would rule out the hard disk).

cheers mate,will try that,this is the first time iv really messed with a laptop and never worked with xp before,does seem quite hot to me,but may be normal?will try tomorrow,thanks mate.

it could be the hardrive is currupt (faulty which causes it to freeze), also 270 for a new laptop screen is complete bollocks, you can get them of ebay for around 30 quid

well,it installs when you do it on the quick format,but then has no sound???now trying on format,and stuck on 52%,doing my head in.
