Brake discs upgrade

Hi guys,

I know there's a lot of threads on brake uprades, but none that I could see that answer my question.

Hopefully some of you maybe able to help...

I want to keep with stock callipers and sizes etc.

I have fitted OEM Brembo brake discs and pads on the rear, they seem good. I have also bought front Brembo pads for the front, but I am stuck what discs are best to buy.

What are my brake disc options?

Brembo Max?

Mintex drilled and grooved?

MTECH dimpled and grooved?

Any advice?

Wouldn't bother with drilled/grooved unless it's just a track car?
Drilled discs weaken with the heating up and cooling down of normal road use and can crack.
Grooved isn't worth it either really because pad wear will increase quite a lot and they could end up cracking again.
Just get some Brembo OEM ones. It's more about pads than discs

Agree with above ( well apart from grooved discs cracking ). I have seen first hand what cracked drilled discs look like after 'failing' and it's not pretty. Stay clear of EBC too, quite weak build quality !

I wouldn't have worried about your rear discs and pads, you coulda saved a bit of money as many would advice you to spend most of the cash on the front. The rear only does something like 20% of your breaking.

I'm a huge fan of Mintex and Ferodo. If you've already bought Brembo pads then stick to Brembo discs, don't mix and match. I have never ran Brembo gear so I have no clue how they perform. But they seem popular.

make sure you use a good brake fluid as well.

You can mix and match discs and pads all you like as long as each axle uses the same product left and right. Best to understand what you are doing though if you do this.....

You will most certainly not see any benefit to running drilled or grooved discs on the road.

Along with your Brembo Brake pads (http://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tuning/citroen/citroen-saxo/saxo-brakes/saxo-brake-pads/citroen-saxo-vtr-vts-oem-brake-pads-brembo.html) you have already bought you will have a braking system as good as OEM.

Should you wish to upgrade the brakes then I would recommend two brake pad compounds for a road car. The Mintex M1144 (http://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tuning/citroen/citroen-saxo/saxo-brakes/saxo-brake-pads/mintex-m1144-brake-pads-citroen-saxo-vtr-vts.html) or the Ferodo DS2500 (http://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tuning/citroen/citroen-saxo/saxo-brakes/saxo-brake-pads/citroen-saxo-ferodo-ds2500-brake-pads-vtr-vts.html)

As Gordzilla says. Give the brake fluid (http://www.kamracing.co.uk/cl-brakes-dot-4-racing-brake-fluid.html) a change. Old brake fluid can make the braking really quite shit.

It needed rear discs and pads anyway, so I had to replace them. Also the calliper was seized up so I had to free that off. Made the car feel much more stable braking from high speed.

I'll just fit Plain Brembo discs then, if there's no advantage with Brembo Max's...??

I opted for plain Brembo discs and Mintex 1144 pads along with braided lines on the front of my VTS, they work well.

do braided lines make difference on high speeds hard braking?
Also, is there any downside for using Braided lines ? (more stress on pump or somtn ?)

car is 106 s16 full original brakes

There are advantages to grooved discs but you wont see that benefit on the road. If you dont glaze your pads then you wont see any benefit anyway...
Brembo Max look nicer.

Theres no downside. VS good condition oe hoses I doubt you can tell the difference, but they dont deteriorate like standard rubber so will give a consistent pedal feel. They are far more resistant to damage and failure due to damage plus you can get some nice colours

It's only noticeable on track or if you drive really hard on road. Good upgrade if you can afford it as they last longer than standard.
