View Full Version : Soon to own another Saxo, QUESTIONS!

Hi guys, first time signing up on here but I did own a Saxo for 8 months a year or so ago.
I am looking to sell my current motor to go back to a Saxo, financial reasons but also because I oddly missed the little thing, it was loud, fast and low. (Currently own a Golf MK5 1.9 TDI FOR SALE!!... going to a Saxo madness? Maybe but I miss my old VTR).
But my question is... What is a bad mileage? I am looking at picking up a VTR for £500 to £800 ideally and I have seen a few at 90K (my last VTR was that) but then I have seen cheaper ones at 120K, is that a mileage to be concerned about in regards to engine?
My old VTR I drove up to 105K I think and only had to replace breaks and exhaust luckily in comparison to recent cars.
Any replies will be appreciated and here is a little mock up photo-shop of what I inevitably hope to build this year ASAP.

Service history is key, if it's serviced and belts/pumps have been done then 100k all day long.

Are you saying if the works been done then 100K is the max mileage engine car you would personally purchase with it being a Saxo?
Thanks Mickswan.

He meant he wouldn't hesitate to purchase a car on 100k+ if the service history is good and the condition of the car is good, the same as myself and probably most other forum owners.
I've had a few saxos, generally you will find if looked after the engines are decent and will certainly go into the high 160000+ no problem.
Most people simply stop spending the money on maintenance due to tax costs, rust or rear axle failures. If all the above is fine, mileage is not a problem :)

Thanks 0range3peel, I thought as much but just wanted a little bit of reassurance. Fingers crossed I will find myself another Blue or the Deep red in the next few weeks.

Bit of a harder find, but you should certainly try to get the VTS, such a better drive than the 8v :y:

Another vote for a VTS here - no point getting a VTR unless you can't insure an S.
Personally I wouldn't really want to buy one with over 100k on the clock, but it depends on condition and SH.

After a hunt online for a VTS they just seem too far away and more ragged with less history too at the moment, that may change in the next few weeks though.
I think my insurance may try and truly dick me over on a VTS though, the 10mpg difference slightly puts me off too but maybe I am just over thinking that.
Other than the extra BHP and 2 seconds faster (apparently) what else does a VTS offer over a VTR?
Cheers guys.

Nothing really other from what you've said. They are a lot quicker though the twin cams really love to rev & the car really picks up 4500rpm+ they certainly have a lot more grunt and as said are a much better drive.
The mpg realistically is not that much different, apart from you really want to give the vts some as it's a great drive.
They are about but certainly a lot rarer than the vtr. Having owned both though, I'd never go back to a vtr and I'm sure everyone else would agree :y:

Aslong as its been looked after it'll run past 100k all day long... everything else has already been covered.
My VTS is on 105k, original engine/box still
Muzizzle VTS on here is on 127k (may of changed) and as above.
You've just got a long grind finding the right one thats all thats clean and well looked after.

I don't know if my old VTR had some ECU work done as the fun kicked in from 2.5/3k revs very nicely.

It still wouldn't be anything like a 16v. I agree with everything Prickle and Orang3peel have said - the mpg is barely different (it's still a 1.6, it's never going to be that heavy on fuel!) and they're so much better to drive than an 8v. Plus, there's still a fair few around.
If you buy a vts and don't like it, and you prefer the vtr then there's something wrong with you :homme:

Pretty much what everyone else has said, VTR's can be pretty frugal, certainly the one I own. I bought mine on 66k and it's now on 129k exactly! Done an oil change every 12k myself and she's sweet. Original gearbox, same front brake pads since I bought it.. etc.
Mine is starting to rust up inside the engine bay, I think you'll struggle to fine a 'mint' one nowadays.
I've lost all love for mine cosmetically anyway, I washed it last september.. Just using it as a super cheap mile muncher for work commute. Still it's great to drive as you know. (52+ MPG on a long drive btw! I get 44MPG on my commute - heavy traffic.) Which IMO is miles more MPG than a VTS would do.
Good luck. :y:

176k miles mine did. About 50k of them were hard driven. Only needed minor MOT fixes, serviced fairly regularly. The death of it was the gearbox shitting itself, it drove great but was tatty and not worth fixing.
My old 1.1 didn't get past 127k lol.
I'd rather have a well loved high mileage one than a 50k granny owner first owner and boy racer second owner!
