View Full Version : No gears when engine is running

I recently did a clutch and gearbox swap on my 106 gti. Since putting it back together (twice) I have been unable to select any gears when engine is running. It cant be the friction plate being wrong way round and had a mobile mechanic come out and put it back in to be sure the release bearing didnt fall off. It grinds if I try to select reverse gear and can not select a forward gear at all.
Anyone have any ideas what it can be?

Its an auto adjusting cable, think I released the ratchet mechanism to get the cable back on the clutch arm

Anyone have any idea what this could be? I had the gearbox reconditioned is there a chance something in there is at fault?

Same thing has happened to me, although I suspect mine is the release bearing as it was making a horrible noise. Are you 100% it's not the bearing?

what happens when you put it in gear with the engine off and start with the clutch down then bring it up?

My bet is that it will shoot off on the starter and he won't be able to disengage the clutch!

It does the same thing as what happens if you try to start car in gear without clutch

Release bearing is definitely on the input shaft, mobile mechanic checked it twice removing gearbox to check it hadn't moved. He did think clutch fork wasn't moving enough or seemed loose. So this must mean it is either cable or clutch fork?

That would be where I'd look yeah, the clutch isn't disengaging.

Clutch cable is not that old only done 20k. If it had been stretched somehow would this cause the problem I'm having? Cable is only £20 but its an a**e to fit lol
