My VTS started to misfire this morning was really loud and car had no power. Got it to work and there is a kwik fit (yeah I know) next door, they done a diagnostic tests and it came back with 16 different faults. They said their machine is generic and pretty much useless!

They didn't want to touch it as they can't identify the problem. I'm not sure where to go with this now, anybody got any ideas? Won't be driving it anyway.

Cheers.

Did you note any of the codes?
Could just be a simple fault which triggered a few error codes.

I didn't to be honest mate, was more blinded by the figures! I'll get a mate to hook it up next few days. You have any idea worst case scenario?

It's really a shot in the dark but i'd start with a faulty coil pack.

Take it to the local Peugeot dealer and give then a tenner to plug the computer in

Got it hooked up today, been advised coil pack. Will do that tomorrow as well as spark plugs. I've got a VTR (for sale ;)) can I use the coil pack from that?

stevo67

Vts coil pack is a different fitment to the vts one,so no mate.

It's now rough idling too, bricking it, could be head gasket?

Alex

A dodgey coilpack will make for general crap running.
Should be able to get one from a breakers for about £20

Picked one up today gonna do plugs in the morning. Engine top cover is giving me grief at the moment haha

Also am I right in saying that there are only the 3 securing screws to remove on the engine top cover? I've removed them but the cover doesn't want to move.

Alex

Think there's 4, should be loose with those off.
It is the black plastic bit you're trying to remove?

Devine15
11th April 2015, 19:10
Yeah the black cover with 16v on it. I un-done the 3 on top. Couldn't see any more obvious ones apart from one on the left side of it which look as if it's attached to a bracket.

Alex

That's the inlet manifold.
The coilpack is on the top of the engine between the two cam covers, under what looks like a bit of corrugated plastic.

Haha. Just as well I didn't get too far. I'll be able to get to the spark plugs there too? Cheers for the advice matey, appreciate it.

Yeh, think the coilpack is 3 or 4 small torx bolts.
Undo those and I'll pop off, you'll need to unplug it too.
Once that's off you can get at the plugs.

Just took out spark plugs, covered in oil a spark end. Looks like I'm up the Creek......

stevo67

Is that all the plugs covered in oil?Check first in case the cam covers are leaking & the oil is dripping down.

Yeah all plugs covered. As you look at the plugs the first 2 seem a bit worse. I'll check the cam covers and hope for the best :( what's the best way to do it?

stevo67

Well check visually for fresh oil/stains coming from the cam covers down onto the cylinder head.

I've got black residue on the outside of the cam covers, I cant take them off because the screws are rounded. There isn't any oil in the middle on the inside where the coil pack is, that looks pretty dry.

If you have new plugs I'd pop them in, if not you can clean the old ones.
Hard to say exactly front the pics where the leak is coming from but the oil filer cap can leak as well as the can covers.

I put the new ones in today. It's running a lot better more responsive now. I've definitely got a leak somewhere, topped up 2 weeks ago now it's near the min line. Reckon it's worth doing a block test?

If the rest of the bolts look like the one in the pic then they're not rounded off,you need either a 16 sided socket or a female torx bit to undo them mate.:y:

Haha I know I got it off it was the ones on the other side that are knackered. Car was fine today with new plugs, started to misfire on way back from work and had lost power again, not as much as last time. Taking to garage first thing. You know what I'm looking at price wise if head gasket has gone?

stevo67
13th April 2015, 18:12
Around the £300-350 mark, because you'll need a head skim head gasket kit.then new water pump and timing belt kit plus fresh coolant.

Thanks, sorting it is a bit out of my expertise. I'll be expecting a couple of hundred quid labour too?

Thought about it but it's the hassle of finding an engine nd picking it up and all that

All signs point to coil pack, just changed it. Will it work straight away? Still rough idling and popping a bit. Haven't taken it out yet but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I've got one That's done 82.000 genuine miles. Just had new timing belt and water pump fitted along with spark plugs. And I'm not to far from you

Devine15
17th April 2015, 18:40
So, changed coil pack and it ran the best it ever has for about 15 min then lost power and rough idling at 1250 same thing happened with spark plugs. I unplugged battery last night and now the battery is giving me jip and my fob is knackered!

Anybody got anymore ideas? I was thinking clean induction kit filter and throttle body? Was gonna look at idle control valve before map sensor. It's driving me mad now.

Devine15

I meant alarm is messing me about not battery! It's still popping on start up too.
