View Full Version : Faulty Resprayed Panels - Any Advice?

Approx 6 weeks ago I had the driver side door and rear wing resprayed in silver. However when I got the car home I noticed that there is like a wiggly approx. 1 inch thick line approx 18 inches long running along the rear quarter in line with around the height of the door handle. I understand panels sometimes looking a different colour to other panels but have never come across this wiggly line effect within a panel.
The silver on the door looks fine and rear wing, however the wiggly line which is around 1 inch thick is a sort of darker grey or light black and blends into the correct silver but gets worse as you look at it from a distance, when you come close it sort of goes away. At one point I thought it was dent when I looked at it from like 8 metres away.
I have taken it back to the garage a few weeks ago where I had it done, but he said it is just to the filler which had to be used on that area and that is why it shows a different colour. He said he can do it again but it will just show up the same.
Apologies as I don't have a cam to take any pics and even if I did I think they won't be that noticeable as I would need to take them from a distance to reflect the difference in colour.
Any info much appreciated. Is it something that could be sorted or shall I just leave it as it is.
Thanks

Take it back tell them you're not happy & you want it done to your satisfaction. If it's a reputable bodyshop then you'll have no probs.

I've already done that and taken it back, however he mentioned that due to the filter content vs where no filler is required, it will come out the same again, plus they take around 3 days to do it too, a bit difficult when you need the car for work.
Is there like a warranty limit on paint jobs?

That sounds like utter rubbish, hard to say without pictures but if there's something up with the filler then they should redo that too.
If you're not happy with it I'd tell them to redo it if they say they can't get the desired finish then get your money back and go to somewhere that can?
Get some pictures up. What's the bodyshop? Or was it a back street garage friend of a friend sort of thing?

It's supposed to be fairly decent as they have quite a big bodyshop plus one of those big oven type units for a whole car. They do get quite a lot of business and work on some rather expensive cars as I had to like wait 3 weeks to get mine in.
It is likely the paint issue won't show up on pics unless a rather expensive camera is used, but i'll give it a try.

I think i have found what the paint issue is called. It is called mottling and is quite common on silver paint. The 2nd picture down the page of the silver wing is a good example of what my rear quarter looks like but its a wiggly straight line instead and there is some on it on this page:

Honestly I had the same problem with a rear quarter on a car it was redone 3 times until I was happy with it painting is not the easiest of things to do go back don't be a cock but explain that you have done some research and that you are not satisfied with the finish.

Paint was applied uneven so left you with the mica in the paint standing on end. What he is saying about the filter is bollocks. Take it back mention trading standards and the paint and body commission and he should sort it free of charge. Shouldn't of taken the car out of the body shop if you were not happy.

Hope this wasn't a cash in hand job with no invoice because if it was more fool you cheaper is never better.

I had to collect it at the end of day just before he closed as i really needed the work the following day, having left it 3 days with the bodyshop
I only noticed it a few days later when i parked it up on a road with a certain level of shade and the paint defect stood out more, as its not that visible as you come in nearer.

So what is the procedure for this, is it a case of taking it down to the metal again and respraying the whole panel or more simpler, Just need to know so the bodyshop doesn't try to fob me off again or even make me leave the car there longer than expected, i will try to book in to them in advance though.

This Bedford guy knows the score as I believe he paints, if you're not happy with a Job and it's not completed to a satisfactory standard and you have a valid invoice then it is you're right to dispute this the car should be as near to factory finish as possible.
Speak to Prickle - he's the King when it comes to multiple resprays...

too close with the gun most probably.. higher concentration of colour/metallics in one area.
