View Full Version : C5 steelies & brake cooling

Looking for some lighter wheels, partially to offset the additional unsprung weight of the heavier 283mm brakes I'm now running.

What are the C5 steelie-style alloys like for brake cooling? They look quite enclosed to me and I'm worried about temps. Anyone run them in anger (track / race)?

Look much cheaper than something like some Team Dynamics.

depends on weight and speed you are carrying really, on a lighter saxo with gpod pads and some ducting you should be ok, but they do indeed hold more heat in than a more open wheel like the team dynamics or a compomotive.

they will be a good two kg lighter than the td wheels, and half the weight of a compomotive rally wheel!!

Somthing like an rc5 or ds3000 pad for a clio is the type to look for if you have the gti6 calipers.

got a set if c5 wheels and pro race 1.2's if youre in the market for them

I saw your ones but location-wise we're on opposite sides of the country and I'm too tight to pay for postage!

I *think* I'll probably go for some TDs. My next decision is whether to go with spacers and a Ford off-set (Ford stuff is more plentiful and therefore cheaper S/H), a chance to swap to studs, but it will mean ditching my existing rims as swapping spacers in and out is a pain so I'll have to be Ford for everything. Decisions, decisions...

where are you? postage is only £20 if youre way off my route or pony express reach.

I'd get rid of the 283s like, they weigh a ton!

Kent. £20 doesn't sound too bad at all...

I *hate* managing hot brakes on track - I'm hoping that these will be fit and forget (with decent pads and cooling). They are heavy, but hopefully I can offset that with lighter wheels and maintain the equilibrium... I did consider 266s, but decided to go for the big!

Having said that, it was only when the box turned up did I realise just how heavy they are.

Unsprung weight man!

I brake hard and I don't cook my 266's, I'd go 266s and ducting if you're that worried. I got obsessed with cooling but never needed it

Of course 266s and lighter wheels would be better. And I did get the 283s for a song. And haven't bought new discs or pads yet. Hmmm.

How much weight difference are we talking between the 266 and 283s?

283's are about 6 kg a disc and 6 kg a caliper.

406 brembo are 8kg a disk and 4 kg a caliper.

My 283mm are 24kg in total...
