View Full Version : Saxo as a second car

Can anyone give advice on the best way to insure my VTR as a second car. I’m currently insured with Admiral and my insurance is £700pa on a 300bhp BMW with all the bells and whistles added in to the policy. Yet, if I want to upgrade to a multicar policy and add a £300 VTR as a runaround / work commuter, they want an additional £500...
Can I start a new policy with my Saxo and insure that through a different company? Would I be able to use my 6yrs ncb on that policy too? Or is that car specific? I’ve tried to ask all of these questions to Admiral but I’m met with their Canadian office and yesterday spent 40 minutes on the phone to a woman who couldn’t even pronounce “Citroen”, let alone give me a decent response to my questions.
Any advice appreciated :).

No you definitely can't use your no claims on more than one car, nor can you split it between 2 cars. I looked into this a while ago when I had 2 cars - the problem is that your second car is always going to be a full price policy added onto your existing policy. The only thing I can suggest is ringing companies who specialise in multicar policies and see what they can do. Although this would mean potentially changing insurers.

Thanks for the reply mate.

Have you got any links to where you found this?
I don’t mind changing insurers providing I do it soon, as my insurance runs out at the end of this month.

Well that was just with Aviva who I'm currently with - so I assume other companies will be the same but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Hi. We can 'mirror' your NCB if you are aged over 25 & have a clean record.
Seems strange Admiral want that much for adding the Saxo. I had my VTR insured with them with mods declared for around £600. When I got my 350z I started a multicar policy with the no claims (4 years) still on the Saxo and ended up paying around £700 for the pair (in the cost breakdown somehow the insurance on the Saxo has dropped to £120!)
I would try Admiral again, hopefully you get someone a bit more helpful. Although insurance companies do seem to pick their prices out of a hat so may still find a better deal elsewhere.

That suggests most companies won’t include my NCB on a new policy if I’m already using it on an existing one. I may have to give you a call as I am 25 and have no points or convictions.

I know. The car is worth about £300, I will only be doing 1k or so a year, and I want the bare minimum cover. It’s reassuring to see you added your Saxo for a mere £120. That’s the sort of figure I’m expecting to pay. Can I ask how you’ve insured it? Miles, cover etc.
My cover is fully comprehensive with all the add-ons except courtesy car with annual mileage of 8,000 for the Saxo. My NCB is used on the Saxo too as for some reason it worked out cheaper overall to use it on that rather than the 350.

I have tried insuring the car under a temporary policy, which worked out at a paltry £13 per month. I can only insure a car on a temporary cover for a maximum of three months. But in short, it would theoretically have cost me £156 for the year if I paid it monthly, or £500 if I wanted to pay it off in one go!
