View Full Version : exhaust manifold smoke

Hi all

I've been having trouble with my saxo. Its a 99' 1.1 engine.

I have removed the exhaust manifold, cause i wanted to take down the head. In the end it wasn't needed. But i did need to replace the manifold gaskets and so I did. I also removed the thermostat housing and the ignition coil, but when i did put them back, i cleaned the surface of the head (there was old sealant still there) and put new red sealant on the place where the thermostat housing goes and where the ignition coil goes. I also replaced the timing belt, but the pump and the tensioner were not replaced (they felt ok, did not make any noise). Now when i fire up the car, after some 15-20 minutes, smoke starts to appear from somewhere from the exhaust manifold and i can not pin point where or why does it appear. The gaskets are new, and the manifold has been torqued to 30nm. Also the valve cover gets quite hot after that time. I can't really remember if that's normal or not since i haven't driven the car for a while....

The engine also produces some weird rattling noise, i guess in the area of the camshaft sprocket. I don't know if the pump was bad (but then it should make noise when spinning with hand ?) or i over tighthened the belt.

Here is the audio of the engine

Thanks to everyone in advance :y:

Either the gasket bedding in and burning off residue.

Or you have a leak somewhere and the oil is burning off on the manifold or on the head.

Just sealed up my rocker covers and it smoked for a good 40 minutes whilst it was burning off all the old oil residue. But be sure to check for leaks first.

Hi All!

No smoke from Saxo any more! :-)

And the engine rattle is supposed to be the timing belt being to tight. I'll fix that on the weekend and then if all works off to fix the body work and hopefuly this winter i'll have again fun in my saxo :-)
