Hi guys, got myself a saxo vtr today for a first car and im now thinking the worst about my decision, i was aware that the mot had advisory for eml on, oil leak and pads wearing thin. Pads im going to price up on ebay rather than go to a citroen/french car dealer or someone who can get them was thinking of replacing all 4 sets if worked out cheap enough or just the 2 that seem to be worn. I was just in a rush get on the road today and didnt pay mad money for it :wall:
EML light i was told by the seller is the lambda sensor which seems to not be a massive job does it come up with a code had a spanner sign on the dash, would this indicate something else or not? And oil leak coming from the rocker cover which i cant see havent had chance to see if its a bad leak
I looked in the oil filler cap and was a small amount of brown like rust residue at the top, my friend has a mercedes a170 that had something similar and was told to do a oil change and replace oil filter, I part rebuilt my 2stroke bike engine so have some idea of how things work on a smaller scale, oil change i could do filter if its easily accessible. No white/creamy oil at all. Not lacking any power. Noticed running warm to the point the fan kicked in when did a 6 mile drive but temp gauge no where seen over half way point?

Thanks for the reply!
Can you give me the link or where exactly to find it?
Im worried about the eml being on more than anything read you can disconnect the battery to turn it off but i want the fault fixed so it doesnt knacker up on me, parts seem to be cheap for these cars even a engine block being under 200 on eBay.
Also going to check if it has a k&n fitted due to not seeing a airbox surely someone cant be stupid enough to not fit a air filter at all?
It came up with two four digit codes on the dash:fcuk:

Most garages will plug the car in for a nominal fee and should tell you straight away what fault has brought the eml on, for the price of pads I'd just change all 4 you can do them yourself they're easy enough to do.
This site has invaluable guides available for most work either use the search function or go to google type in your problem along with car type and first hits are usually from this site (y)

I'll search for the guide/s later on or something, there seems to be plenty of help/info bout the cars on the internet.
For the sake of 50 its gonna be worth doing the whole lot all 4 discs and sets of pads I could fit pads myself not to sure about discs tho
I noticed it was low on rad water and hoping that the seller hasn't done a cunts trick and done it on purpose if the head gasket has gone. It has done 108 k so being a french car I'm expecting problems but it runs fine not cammy, bottom endy (if that's the word) not lacking power whatsoever very quick for what it is!

Don't buy discs or pads from ebay,as some are fake & I don't really need to spell it out the dangers in that.

Disc and pad change all round, do the fluid too. For a road car any decent name discs will do, pads choice is up to you however depending on what you want for the car

Discs are the easiest bit just have a torx retainer bolt on em if it's rounded off just drill it out don't need them anyway

I was advised to try bleeding the brakes get the pedal less spongy but the disc one or two have a lip so need replacing will be replaced asap, will take the advice and get a named brand brembo mintex etc still under 100
The temp/fan issues seems to be a common issue on the vtr must just be how they are made, its fine when driving just when stood still running it gets over half way mark and fan kicks in takes 30 seconds or so to go to dead on half way so does its job, i was thinking possibly water pump worn how would i know if it was? Is it easy to do a radiator bleed and flush ?
I put a lambda sensor off a citroen c3 8valve it was same thread just a bit longer i fitted it and runs ok? Light still on though also fitted breather pipe from the c3 and fits nicely seems to run abit smoother not sure why some one would remove part ofit (the pipe from airbox to engine)
I have 7950 code on dash when turn ignition on how can i find out what this code is without plugging it in, iv searched the net and found nothing but for 350 mot'd i was thinking its alot worse than it seems to be and parts for these seem reasonable, maybe getting a french car wasnt that bad of decision!

Code on start up relates to service interval - mile till or overdue.

the fan kicking in when in traffic/stood still is perfectly normal (esp. in summer) as long as it actually brings the heat down and it doesn't keep rising :y:

Thats the thing it does keep rising when stationery i was in a drive through yesterday and the fan kicked in twice bringing it down to dead on half way both times then the fan stops ?
Im a bit worried about my service spanner symbol it has a number underneath now its on 6850 i think but goes down in 50's what does this mean?
Where can i find the engine fault code guide anywhere?
Also have a clunk when on full lock or seems when i go around a roundabout to the right what could this be? Ball joint ? Bad suspension ?

Iv searched for service light etc but nothing that tells me how to turn it off, iv ordered new air filter and oil filter going do a oil change aswell but told be better off letting a garage do it as its a messy job:y:
Can you give me the link of how to turn it off? Once done the air filter change, oil filter and oil change will it go off automatically or need taking off manually?

changing oil and filters is piss easy.
how to turn it off?
it's all over youtube.

And I'd rather check the oil's colour instead of relying on some electronic timer to tell me when the oil needs replacing.

Iv done what said in the youtube video to hold in the button and turn ignition on and off but to no joy its just reset the miles due till service, i want to turn the spanner off upon switching ignition on? Changed air filter other was all shitted up, just oil filter i dont want to mess up and oil change id rather pay someone to do, when i got the car oil was a mustardy colour so hasnt been changed in a while im guessing?

Also feels like my trackings out pulls to one side fairly bad with the clunking on full lock just the once not a persistent knock what should i be looking at replacing? I read somewhere worn suspension mount rubbers or something like that, ball joint, driveshaft, axle?

It could be any one of those things pal. Best to have a look under there and give a visual inspection and give it all a wiggle to see if anything is loose. My guess would be driveshaft though. Maybe someone more experienced can give a better diagnostic.
Regarding the miles due to service. I have that too, I think I'm right in saying that it cant be taken away.
Hmm, I think you need to change your engine oil if it's a mustardy colour. Should be a semi-transparent golden brown???
The pulling to one side... maybe worth asking the garage to balance wheels/check your tracking....

Pulling to one side can also be brakes needing bleeding or a sticking caliper.

If your oil is a mustard colour on the dipstick that means it's emulsified so it's got water in it. Change it but it could mean head gasket problems or even worse ie block or head damage

I noticed the top rocker cover bolts weren't exactly very tight so whether they've rattled loose I don't know but iv tightened them abit to see if it still leaks from the rocker cover.
The oil colour on dipstick seems fine quite dark I just noticed a tint of brown in the filler cap ? So the spanner symbol can't be taken away? What are the cheap diagnostic tools like off ebay do they tell you what the code on dash mean?
What are symptoms of head gasket gone ? I'm hoping the browny colour it was when it first had it was just due to moisture somehow got in possibly from the loosish rocker bolts? Head gasket is something I really don't want to have to have done can't see it being much more than 05100 fitted at a garage? But I'd prefer do it myself with help.
Are mintex brakes a good make ? Not really seemed have trouble on ebay and if it says they're a certain make they should be and not fakes? Delphi and mintex seemed be around 0570-80 for all round discs and pads
