View Full Version : VTS misfiring - electrical gremlin?

My vts was running fine until I tried to start it yesterday morning. It started and idle fine but as I reversed off the drive it started to misfire (sounded like it was running on 2 but could of been 3 cylinders) and it died. Tried to start up again and it would die unless giving it quite a bit of throttle, still misfiring.
Suspected the coil pack so tested that and it appears to have had it. Great I'll get a new one and job done. But no, fitted the new one this evening and its still playing up. It idled fine for about 5 seconds. It will now idle without cutting out but it still a cylinder or two down.
I have checked the spark plugs and they are fine (only a few months old) and just had a look at injectors and they appear to be ok. So I'm guessing it's an electrical problem, my nightmare!
I will start by checking earths tomorrow but other than that I'm not really sure what to check. Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer any advice?
Oh and sorry for the long winded, waffling post.

I didn't check they were firing but when I pulled them out they were all clean and wet. Will make sure they are firing properly tomorrow. Is it just a case of turning it over and pulling a plug off one by one to see if it makes a difference?
As for alternator I assume it's ok. It showed no signs of problems before and the battery is charged as normal. Also would it not cause it to die completely, rather than just a cylinder or two?
Thanks for the help guys

yeah mate get it running/idiling and unplug an injector at a time and see if it makes a difference, if it does then you know that particular injector is alright...and so on:y:

Might be a bit tricky getting to the middle two with the top half of the inlet on but will give it a go

it will be awkward like, tbh i dont even know if you can get them off with the top part of the inlet on, never tried it!
or what you can do is just rip the rail out along with the injectors, place a piece of paper/card infront of the injectors and get someone to crank it while you check to see if all the injectors are doing what they should be doing!

That's the way I did it in the end. Was impossible with the inlet on. The injectors are all working ok by the looks of it. The problem is still there after putting it back together. I guess it must be something electrical on the ignition side before the coil pack.

Check map sensor....I was hunting a misfire problem for the past few months! Replaced every engine sensor but wasn't until I replaced map and knock sensor til the misfire went so one of them was the fix on mine....knock sensors don't trigger a fault code either as far as I know

Had something similar on my two tone vts,few months back.
turned out to be "brown" relay underneath the Ecu (double injection relay).
Vts is spot on now...

This is giving me the shits. I've had the same problem for months now, I've tried new plugs, leads, ICV, TPS, Coilpack, two bottles of injector cleaner, checked the injectors, cleaned the TB and load of other 'fixes' and it's still doing it.
I'm waiting on another ICV and MAP sensor and if that doesn't work I'll try the lambda.
Saxokid100 mentioning the relays now has left me full of doubt. Is there a way to test these?
