View Full Version : What car.

I'm looking for a bit of advice.
I'm contemplating buying a car to tie up some money, not as an investment as such but a car that'll hold its price rather well,so I can have some fun and enjoy the car but in the end up after a few years I can sell it on for a reasonable price if I decide to do so.
The car itself won't be driven that much,it'll be more of a weekend car but with the family I fancy something that we can use from time to time for days out or weekends away.
I always fancied a E46 M3 but with it being a 2 door I've swayed away from that so I've narrowed it down to
Evo of some sort, preferably an 8 but it depends on spec.
Impreza, I'm not sure what one. I've been looking at UK spec sti V8 and even the newer ones, but also classic sti's, they all seem to hold their money well. I've ruled out type r's and P1's due to them being 2 doors.
BMW M5 E60, I like the class of the BMW, comfort, I don't know what it is exactly but I love it.
Budget will be roughly 16k max, that's another thing, I could get some decent spec evo's and impreza's for 8k which is half the budget but the M5 is something else.
Any help or info would be appreciated.

You wouldn't lose money on the right E46 M3..
That's what I'd get, good ones are going up in value.

Only thing putting me off is it being a 2 door, but I suppose it wouldn't be too much hassle for how little it'll be getting used.
The main reason I always wanted a E46 M3 were the same reasons to why I like the M5, classy, comfortable, great interior, looks good and has plenty power. They're a lot cheaper than the M5 and I suppose I could maybe go for a M5 further down the line.

Like I say, it's where my money would go.
I like the E60 M5 but the gearbox & electrics on them scare me..

A 997 would be a good investment. But it would be difficult to find within your price range. There’s one on Autotrader, however it has huge mileage (linked below). You could buy a 997, run it for 2-3 years, and sell it for pretty much the same price.

Has anyone owned the E46 M3?
I've decided that more than likely that's the car but I'm trying to decide whether to go for the SMG box which I had intended to but after watching some YouTube vids I'm now led to believe the manual is more desirable.
I also don't like the convertibles so that's a definite no no.
There's plenty available, some good ones as well. I've already been eying up supercharger kits :wall::wall: oh good lord!

E6X M5 bender here.
I'd get an E46 as an investment car, you mayyyy be able to get a CS for that money.
If you bought an M5, it would be leggy, you'd want the warranty, north of 60k on it and the monthly warranty cost will be eyewatering.

All this talk of Megane's and M5's is bringing down the class of this once prestigious site

Haven't owned one, used to drive my brothers, have been keeping an eye on them for the last few months while looking for a new job - commute pending!
Manual coupes are more desirable, SMG's are prone to pump failures. The manual has got quite a long throw, but the shift feels a lot more positive with a weighted knob.
Make sure you get the rear subframe checked on any you look at, prone to cracking.
These might be worth a nose through:

Or would I be better spending a bit more and getting an RS4???
Do you think they'll hold their money well? Most are around 15-20k.
It would take the hassle out of deciding whether I'd like a manual or SMG.

I had one, I didn't like. I tried to convince myself of all the hype but in the end it was just meh. It needed near 5k spent on it for a service, clutch, brakes and parking sensors so I sold it, got 19k for it too, only last 2 grand in the 14 months I had it. They will likely hold their money as they're the last of the V8 manuals but there are some proper dogs out there.
I'd got C63 over the RS4, hell id go E90 M3
Looking at cars that are appreciating, sunbeam lotus' are doing well. If I kept mine it'd be worth 3 times what I sold it for 5 years ago

Did you do many miles in the RS4? Running costs, was it mega? I've been doing a bit of research online and I'm kind of getting put off tbh. I was thinking that if I bought from a dealer, and didn't do many miles then surely it wouldn't cost that much but I'm not sure if I want to take the risk.
I'll be able to afford it but that's beside the point, I don't want to throw a shed load of money at something when the whole intention is to try and get back what I paid out, within reason anyway.
Its seems there's more issues with the RS4 than the E46 M3, most E46's have their issues addressed where as most ads for the RS4 say sweet fook all about any of their usual problems.

E39 M5.
5 doors, and will rise in price. fits your needs?
I can't see the E60 rising, it's the E36 of the M5 range.

Unless you intend to keep it 20 years all the cars you're looking at were built in the wrong century

Did around 4000 miles I guess, nothing went wrong in that time that I had to fork out for (parking sensors stopped working which I diagnose through Vagcom as failed sensor front and back). I didnt want one and never had any feeling toward them but it looked pretty sweet when I saw it sitting on the forecourt, hence why I bought it. I quickly regretted it but decided to stick with it, read all the usual blather about getting a decoke, remap etc and experiencing a real RS but it wasnt the car for me. I did fanny with it abit, intake, exhaust, spacers etc but it was still a disappointment, especially after a spirited drive in my fathers C63. Heres a vid of mine with a Tubi exhaust, it was loud as fuck.

Have a look on RS246, there are known issues with them, DRC failure, blistering wings, engine coking, clutch issues etc but then E92 M3's have actuator issues and C63's melt engines due to the shitty metal used in the heads. Like you say, find a good E46 and you *should* be sweet.
In the end I went for a RRS which is what I originally was after, much happier, just jump in and off you go, no worries.

E46 all the way. Just use a good buyers guide to find out the usual niggles (fucked boot floor, rotting arches, failing smg pump). Of all the things in the E46, I thought the interior was the worst, theres absolutely no support in the seats! But I am spoiled by being used to Recaros.

Time for a thread revival......
I'm worse than a woman and kept changing my mind, I couldn't decide whether I wanted something that was mega £££££'s or something that was decent at much cheapness.
I ended up (because it was relatively local and I liked it) buying a Subaru Impreza wrx wagon PPP blobeye. The motor was very clean for its age and looked really nice, I have a soft spot for the wagons. We had a non turbo version when I bought this and the difference was very welcoming.
But........I've got something lined up that is a bit mental, 500+ bhp so that should be barrels of fun.
I'll be keeping the wagon, the missus wants that so that'll become her daily. It's currently running 260 ish, boosting @ 1.4bar on the std TD04. Only thing I'm going to do is fit bigger brakes because the std brakes are gash and stick a RCM decat downpipe on + another map. They say the PPP has roughly 260 bhp @ 1.1bar but a lot say that's optimistic. But there's been a subsequent map done and with it now at 1.4bar I'd expect at least 260bhp. With the decat downpipe I'd definitely expect 260-270bhp. PPP package is Prodrive decat midpipe, Prodrive Y pipe and map. A Prodrive backbox was added at a later date.
