None are much good for free as the time needed to code anything good is massive, the one we run at work is the kersperskey free but this only detects then when it discovers a virus they charge you £25 for subscription

Use Avast on the better half's PC but the real solution is not to use Windows

This is fine if using anything other than windows 10. I usually swear by Avast but in Windows 10 it blocks the start bar for some bizarre reason.

Windows Security essentials and firewall should cover most if sensible.
AVG used to be good, probably still is but they recently changed their T's and C's stating they can sell your info/browsing etc... Though since google/facebook are already doing that then its probably not a real issue

Avira has been the least resource hungry antivirus with theleast false positives for me. Avast and AVG used to tell me about 'viruses' they discovered on a daily basis.

360 Total Security + GlassWire is a pretty good solution that I like.
Panda Cloud is very good if you want something that doesnt pop up every couple of hours.
Avast is also very good, great detection rates but annoying pop ups.
AVG has become bloated.
To be fair most free anti virus solutions should cover you pretty well for casual browsing of le web.
