Hi all,

Really need some advice.

Had a new clutch and front brake discs and pads installed on my 1.4 W Reg Furio yesterday.

Car is a good runner, never had any real issues... But driving into work this morning I've noticed that when I put the car into first when I'm in motion (eg coming up to a junction) It takes quite a lot of effort, it doesn't just glide in like it did before the new parts were installed. But when the car is not in motion - it's slides into 1st without any issues.

Is this to do with the clutch change? Do I have to wear the clutch in or something? - I paid £310 for the whole job which I thought was a pretty good price aswell?

Thanks all!

In general you shouldn't use 1st gear except for starting off from stationary. Downshifting into first will wear out the synchro. Having said that, the clutch cable may need readjusting so you might as well go back to the garage if you do notice some issues.

Where is the pedal when you clutch in, as in top middle or towards the floor. If it feels near the top then it would need readjusting a bit.

As above, you shouldn't put the car in first when it's moving.

It's hard to go in because the synchro can't spin the shaft up fast enough. You'll find it would go in if you blipped the throttle up to about 2500rpm at 5mph.

Sounds fine to me.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I took the car back to the garage, he said the same as you guys - that I should never put the car into 1st when driving. I think it's just a habit I've had for ages.

Thanks all.

I've seen a few people with the same habit, just let second gear drop to 1200 revs-ish then clutch in and brake. It's a 1.4, you don't need to heel and toe, match rev and all that for eveyday driving.
