I am rebuilding my vtr and everything will be stripped off underneath, my plan is to clean up the whole underside and get it as rust free as possible, do any welding that might need to be done and then coat the whole underside of the car so my question is can I stonechip the whole underside of the car or is there any areas that's not recommended?

You should be fine to coat all the underside as you've taken off the brake lines and exhaust etc.

Have noticed not many people seem to stone chip or underseal the underside of the boot area, any reason for that?

Tbh I don't know mate, possibly the close proximity to the fuel tank?

The spare tyre acts as cover for the boot surface so it remains quite rust free but if you are stripping everything definitely protect this area too.

Ah yeah didn't think about that as I haven't had the spare attached under the boot for quite a while. just want to get the whole lot cleaned up and protected then it can be forgotten about hopefully, got to be one of the worst jobs to do so don't want to be doing it twice!

May be the close proximity to the fuel tank, a lot of the underseal type treatments are flammable

I don't use the automotive underseals, it's far more cost effective to get bituminous roofing paint and brush that on everywhere

Once you have the shell well protected the hard part is over, mechanical stuff is quite reliable if taken good care of and for the most part easy and cheap to replace by yourself anyway.

I've heard that spraying oil onto the underside and arches is good for keeping rust at bay,how good it is I don't know.

Yeah I've heard oil is good for rust as well never actually given it a go though. I think I'm just going to stonechip the lot to be honest then give the wheel arches a spray over in the body colour so it still looks original

Old idea that is spraying the underpinnings with oil. Kind of thing they'd do to old land rovers as well as wiping panels down with wd40 to restore paint shine lol
