Hi all, I've just replaced my 03 reg petrol 1.1 with another (cam belt went - she was a beaut before that - *cries*). The new one is the same but a 51 plate I got dirt cheap as I desperately needed a car for work. I'm pretty new to breaking and doing the work myself having relied on garages before (and an extra 10 years of motability means I'm basically ignorant!) Have always loved Saxo's since I was a wee youngster and now I own one I want it to be the best I can and make it last. can anyone advise which bits are best to steal off the old for the new? it has its fair share of issues but I'm hoping they're cheaper than the £600 I dont have for a new cam belt etc. The old one flew through MOT no advisories no issues until cam. The replacement car is due its MOT and I know it will fail - and the Haynes manual isn't as helpful as I'd hoped -
* the rear near side light doesn't work despite replacing all parts except the electric plug - is this an easy job to replace?
* power steering squeaks - a case of topping up fluid? If so, how?
* front near side fog light smashed, working on getting off old car but need a decent Jack
* pulls to left when braking, brake pads fine
* the clock is constantly resetting itself to 1 o'clock and the petrol gauge sticks at 1/2 when ignition switched off. Whoever tried working on it before put green ambient lights behind the dash.
*stereo (kenwood KTC-BT6044 always needs retuning, doesn't hold memory - is this a stereo thing or a wiring thing?
*clutch on its way out, bites very late. Easy to change?
*central locking doesn't work
I get the impression someone tried to stick a big ICE in but did a bad job the parcel shelf is mutilated. I've stuck the speakers on eBay, I don't need them as my job means I don't need a parcel shelf.
Please dont belittle me, I'm willing to learn and do the work myself!

I'm pretty useless but I can help with the above - if you remove the stereo, find a yellow wire and a red wire - they will both have connectors in them, unlike all the other wires. Simply swap them over so red-yellow and yellow-red and it will memorise your settings/stations.

What speakers are they out of interest? Are they 6.5"?

They are fusion EN-FR6931. That's all I can tell you! No wires, no box, no instructions.

Providing your brake pedal ain't spongy/pushing to the floor you need to take the pads out of the caliper and wire brush where the pads sit, they are most likely gunked up, then put some copper grease on where you wire brushed! Failing that the piston of the caliper may be seized or you could have a leak on a brake line (that would cause spongyness)
As for your clocks, maybe just take out the clocks and unplug the wires, my clocks were doing the same but since I unplugged them they seem to be fine.
If you're stripping parts from the old car, I'd get the throttle off to start as eBay idle control valves are cheap but dont work, genuine ones and motor factor icv sensors are about 50 quid so defo worth boxing up your throttle. (easy job, take air box off at jube clip on throttle, unplug idle control sensor and throttle position sensor, they are on the back, then there's 3 star bolts to take throttle off and accelerator cable just slackens and pops off)
Also I would go for the shocks and bottom arms as they seem to be quite a common thing for mot.
All easy enough jobs with basic tools!
Hope this helps

Your rear light, look at the bulb holder, does it have rust in it? If so just rub it down with some sand paper!
Squeaky pump could be a bearing, think saxo 1.1 has electric pump assistance off the top of my head but that won't fail mot don't worry.
Central locking maybe a fuse?
Clutch is easy enough, depending on how skilled you are if your good a few hours, if you're crap like me a weekend pmsl. You will need some decent tools for that, square headed socket for gearbox drain and fill plug, first time I done it I just grinder a fat Allen key into a square lol. The rest is just normal socket set. You'll need a clutch alignment tool too, about a 5er in machine Mart.

With the fog light you're old one should be exactly the same plug on the back, shouldn't need a jack either, there's only one screw, Phillips screwdriver if I remember, the screw is on the back of the fog light itself and hold the bracket coming off the bottom of the light to the front bumper rest..... As for the central locking, look in the fuse boxes for a blown fuse, there is one in the dash underneath glovebox, and one in engine bay on right hand side, replace any blown fuses and see if that works, when you say the central locking doesn't work do you mean that only one side of the car locks at a time or when you push lock on your key fob nothing happens?

Also the power steering I'd imagine is probably the belt on its way out, can you upload some photos of your engine bay for me so I can get a better picture of layout?

Would it be easier to just swap the heads over and fit a new cambelt kit to your old car? Those annoying faults you've got on your new motor can drive you mad sometimes trying to fix them.

Power steering on saxos has no belt, it's electric, topping up fluid id by filler neck, fluid level should be at bottom of neck.

Clutches are never easy but I can't think of an easier car than a Saxo.

Front fog light is not needed for MOT

Clock resets to 1 oclock when battery is disconnected; can be a symptom of defective battery or alternator.

Brake caliper probably partially seized on left, push itin and out a few times.

Thanks all for your help, she flew through the MOT no advisories. They had a look at the niggles and said that its age related squeaks - she's a sound motor. The other has gone off to a mates house to look at the damage and to see if they can replace the cam belt. If they can't she's going for spares/repairs, if she can be fixed the newer one is being sold. New clutch on its way - gonna replace it just in case as it bites so late it stalls.

Shadowslayerzz- it came with one key no fob, haven't checked fuse yet but will do.
