Hi all.
Could one of these cams be left in the car at night to record? The reason i'm asking is that some little turd tipped emulsion paint over the car last night.
Cheers in advance.:y:

I believe some can be used for this but cant give you any information as such as never used them. If its at your home it may be worth also looking at a house based CCTV.

Normally you wire them in via the ignition so that when you switch off it switches off, but there should be no reason why you can't wire it to a constant live.

Also looking at one (front+back/permanently wired), some cunt reversed into my car a few weeks ago. Got his reg and all but the police in convential fashion, did sweet fuck all.

Most of these dash cams are on a 30 minute loop, so leaving them on a permanent live will be useless, unless obviously the accident happened less than 30 minutes prior to you stopping the camera and reviewing the footage.

I don't want it to be plugged in the cigarette lighter socket all the time and have a cable hanging around. Besides, I have an audi and they did not move the dash design about to accommodate for right hand drive. So in effect, anything plugged into the lighter socket is in the way of the (manual) gear stick, it is a bit of a pain to drive with a plug + cable sticking out.
I'm quite interested in something that would be near or on the rear view mirror.

Speak to Ross. Blackvue units that only turn on when either ignition is on or when motion is detected. Hide the wires running into rooflining and A pillar into glovebox. Hours work, peace of mind.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you wanted something that would be on and recording all the time, as opposed to wanting something that was out the way of the cigarette lighter. Where my useless bit came in was because most dash cams (with the exception of the one Dom suggested) are intended for traffic accidents and so record on 30 minute loops. Having them ‘on’ overnight would be no use because any incidents they would capture will be overwritten 30 minutes later.

^^^ yeah no worries, it's just a bit of design that got in the way. I'm not going to drive with some stuff sticking out every time I shift a gear.
Thanks Dom, not sure yet as I was kind of thinking wiring it the other way because the fusebox is on the drivers side, I'll find out anyhow.
All that said, I'm running a dashcam app on my phone at the moment.

Also true, I am intending to go into the glove box as that's where my electrical connections will be hidden (I don't have the CD changer in there).
Ross also utilised the rear dash cam to activate and be used as a reversing camera, with the picture showing on the Audi RNSE as he was reversing. There's some pretty cool things you can use them for.
I don't need a reversing camera as I know how to park :homme:

I got a cheapy dash cam off ebay that does 1080p recording, I've hard wired it and have it running under roof lining down pillar to mini fuse box, the cam itself when left in car will be off until it senses movement or a jolt it then records for 20 mins I think or until no movement in area.

Not sure where you've got this 30minute loop idea from.
Dashcams record in segments, the bigger the memory card the more segments that can be recorded before it starts to overwrite the first one.
Mine are in 3 minute chunks, with around 6hrs total recording time before it starts overwriting the first segment again.
You can get dashcams which when the ignition is off become a motion based camera so will only record when they sense movement.

Fair enough mate. I was going off what I’d seen.
