Hey all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Saxo 1.1 2000 SPI TU1M HDZ 61k

Basically i've got a whirring noise coming what sounds like the pulley side of the engine.

I initially thought this could be the alternator.. but it's not it still makes the noise with the aux belt taken off.

Then i thought it's got to be the water pump and or tensioner, so ive installed a new water pump and timing belt kit even though the old ones seemed to be ok upon inspection.

NOISE STILL THERE! :wall:

the noise is loudest if you just very slightly rev then let it go back to idle, the only way i can describe it is "bad bearing noise".

It is constant, no knocking or banging just the usual tappety tap tap and ticking injector.

I will come back later with a video link to see if i can convey the sound im hearing.

Cheers, Scott

By the way, the belt tension is not the culprit either.

Took it out for a little test run today after work, from cold under load i.e accelerating in 3rd gear from about 20 mph i could hear this squeaking which now makes me think is is a main bearing or somthing like that.

Another video of the squeaking noise, for this test i just used 2nd gear with the handbrake on and bit the clutch and its not the fan belt slipping even though thats what it sounds like.

Any thoughts....??

Did you replace the tensioner as well? What condition is the bottom pulley like?

Take off the cambelt cover at the top and check to make sure nothings wrong or rubbing inside there, to me in kinda sounds like the cambelt might be rubbing the cover?

Hey all thanks for the replies, much appreciated. My mistake with the videos they should all be viewable now lol.

Yes it's had a new tensioner , belt and pump. The bottom pulley is fine and the crankshaft oil seal seems good too. The car drives fine and pulls properly through the gears and to me it does sound like something is rubbing..but it isn't.

I've had the new belt off again and re timed the engine. Checking everything as I go (belt tensioner , tension, covers for signs of rubbing it's all good... i'm out of ideas.

Somebody mentioned main bearings to me but I thought that was more of a knocking sound :geek:

That to me sounds like clutch release thrust bearing mate...

Thrust bearing if it's on it's way out will still make whirring even if you're not on the clutch

Hey all, yeah never thought about that it could be the release bearing. Milage is 61,473 to be exact lol

Could be a possibility mate, my release bearing started to squeal like a pig at about 55k on my older mk2, was my fault for driving like a twat though.... If you're gunna look into the release bearing you may aswell replace the whole clutch whilst you're at it as it all needs to come out to get at the bearing anyway... Just a heads up in case you don't know :y:

Awesome , thanks for all the replies everyone, I'll probably do the whole clutch in the next few weeks when I get a couple of days off work. Any one recommend LUK clutch kits? I've heard they are good but they are about 20 cheaper than valeo at my local spares shop which makes me a bit dubios ( I know to avoid the cheapo ones like transmech). I'll report back with results when I've changed the clutch.

Thanks again everyone,

Scott.

Hey everyone just thought I would let you know I've managed to cure the problems with the old saxo. Whirring noise was the cam belt turns out it was too tight, for me getting the correct tension is harder than it may seem after many attempts i got it and had to inspect it running with the covers off to make sure it wasn't flapping. The squeaky chirp was my alternator replaced that and aux belt and squeaky noise has gone.

Next job washer bottle pump lol

I thought I'd done it all right the first time, but didnt. Lesson learned, cheers again people. Much appreciated
