It used to be easy at one time a can of gtx or duckhams change the oil and thats it. There now seems to be dozens of different types...what oil would you suggest for a standard 1.1 saxo....mineral, synthetic, semi synthetic. I've read the oil section but it seems to relate more to track cars.
Thanks

Stick with the manufacturers guidelines of 10w40. Castrol GTX Magnatec semi synthetic is perfectly fine for a standard low performance engine.

Fully synthetic is generally better, but I doubt it's going to make much difference on a 1.1.

These old TUs were designed for semi synthetic.
It probably wont hurt it running a synthetic mind you, after all its an old engine and if anything happened could you really put it down to the wrong grade of oil or just wear and tear on a 13 year old (at the youngest) engine?
Save your money and just stick a 10w40 semi in. Any decent brand will do and will be cheap from one of the big players in the market

There won't be any difference in lubrication properties between semi and fully synthetic. Fully synthetic is just slower to break down meaning the quality of the oil will last longer.

its better at dealing with high temperatures than a semi synthetic too but none of this will really make any difference to this engine, only thing it will do is lighten your wallet to a greater extent.
You could run it on a mineral oil if it got changed regularly but you'd have to go out of your way to find an oil like that in this grade

Or get fully synthetic for £2 more and you get 5 litres over 4.

Euro usually have discount codes knocking around so you could probably get it even cheaper.

^^^ cheers for that, just about to get some.
Wondering who makes that tripleQX brand, They use to sell some rebranded Fuchs, now the internet mostly says it's Shell stuff. Just had a sniff around and apparently it's approved by mercedes and VAG.
All that said, I would not put full synthetic oil in a saxo engine, 10w40 semi is what's needed for older engines like the TU

I also have heard it is made by Shell
Obviously they arent shouting about their suppliers to all and sundry but with a bit of digging you can find it out, just ring their customer services and request a COSHH data sheet for that product.
For instance:
Tesco own oil is made by tetrosyl, who make carlube.

home bargains sell an oil which is is made by Rock Oil, big name in the motor bike world apparently.
ECP Eicher brake parts are made by TMD friction who made Pagid, Textar, Mintex.

It has exactly the same properties lubrication wise except it is far more resistant to heat and mechanical breakdown, you can safely extend oil changes if you wanted to.

On the old girl I used to change at about every 6 to 7.000 miles or one year regardless. I remember using castrol which would come out near brown/black while the fuchs stuff was still golden and seemed to be longer life.
