Hello all,

Just wondering if any one else has managed to screw up an engine by (I think) allowing the wet liners to rise part way out of the block on a Saxo 1.1.
Had a cam belt failure which bent the valves, changed the belt, water pump and tensioner and all 8 valves but in the process rotated the engine and two of the liners rose part way out of the block. which I pressed back in - I have never worked on an ally engine before and wet liners are new to me.

Got the whole thing reassembled - started straight away and was sweet for a short while and then the tick over sped up to 2000 revs and then started to kind of hunt between normal tick over and 2000 revs. Then found water in the oil - in fact the water leak into the sump was so bad that I could top up the reservoir and watch the level drop! I guess I have stuffed the O-rings on the liners. My question is: would you agree the O-rings and if so is it worth tackling? One further thing - the head was torqued down from 20Nm + 120 degrees - not 240 degrees that may be necessary (not sure if this 2nd 120 degrees is for ally or iron engine though?)
The car is a very lightly used 2002 with under 50,000 miles on it and everything (apart from the engine now that this dumbo has worked on it) is top line. It's also my wife's and I am in deep do-do now having destroyed her 'baby'!!

Any advice please will be most gratefully received.

Head bolts are:

1. 20nm
2. 120 degrees
3. 120 degrees

That's what i remember from a 1.4 i did same block (correct me if i am wrong)

What did you end up doing?

:sad:I did 20 Nm then 120 degrees, so not enough.

no the liner seals will have stretched when they moved up --then will have doubled up when you pushed them back down --so that why they leaking .
bad news is to fix it you will need to remove head +sump
undo con rods bolts and push liners +pistons out in one piece
clean replace +seals and rebuild.
I can supply liner seals --other way is to clean block+ liners very carefully --then use high quality sealer and make a bead around bottom of liner where seal would have fitted --refit liners +headwith old h/gasket tighten up a bit etc --while it sets --then next day re build properly

Would I be correct in saying that the wet liners need to be standing proud of the cylinder block surface by about 4 thou. with cylinder head removed.
Across all four cylinders,

Thanks for your reply, just the information I was looking for; I will call you for cost for O Rings and other parts I will need.

Thank you for your comment - I will look into that before doing the job. Don't want to have to do it again!

Having only just finished off doing the head gasket etc etc on my daughters Saxo which went on hers at 82.000 miles;)
It was as you so rightly point out, it is a vital check on doing the replacement head gasket to carry out a liner heights check measurements before proceeding any further;)
I checked hers 4 and 5 different times just to make sure that is what the exact measurements we had, before commencing any further;)
Her Saxo has now 93,000 miles without a beat since and I still have the Saxo. hers is 1.4 8v but the principle will be the same as your;)
I only mentioned the liner heights because nobody else had ;)
