Hi guys,
I am having problems with my stock vts gearbox and i want to know if changing to a 13x59 or 14x60 would be a good idea. The engine right know is pretty much stock, and I don't really prioritize top end speed. I want to be able to accelerate faster, yet how will it affect my mileage?
My plan would be eventually to have the engine sitting around 170 bhp. Does the gearbox change will make a night and day difference on acceleration?
Do you guys recommend any other alternatives?
Just to get some background this is my daily driver and its used for city driving and occasional hooning xD.
Thanks

Are you sure, I would have thought that the ratios are all wrong, diesel boxes normally are high ratio so it would kill any acceleration

yup, diesel box all wrong, you want the sport cluster on whatever final drive suits your use and a limited slip diff.

Yeah the diesel box isn't really an option since I want acceleration over top speed. And the lsd will come eventually ;) I just would like to know if a 13x59 or 14x60 would be a considerable difference.

14/60 is std fitment to a vts gearbox--if it ain,t got that --it ain,t a vts g box

I tripped across this on a Suzuki website. More info than I've seen anywhere else for MA boxes.

Oh my bad, but do you think the 13X59 gearbox is a worthy upgrade? Is it to short for road use?

There used to be a fad for putting lower boxes like that out of the 1.3s 106/205/ax in 1.6s but really there that low first gear just becomes ridiculous and you just end up with noise and drinking fuel if your doing any motorway miles. Unless your racing I personally would not bother.

I'm not really doing motorway miles, mostly city so would it be a big difference in mileage in city driving?

no -- mpg will be very litte if any different --cos you will be using lightly throttle when at slightly higher rpm --so town driving would not expect any dif if everything is right on car--but acceleration will be much better +first gear --when do you use that? --for about 4seconds when starting off
fuel consumption +high gearing has come about with diesels mainl,y which have loads of torque +boost at low rpm --no fine lambda control on oil burners , --that why petrol will not be effected as much by it
the laetset trend now is back to peetrol +boost to give super economy +some power for overtaking with modern ecu control over turbo +fly -by wire throttle you can almost anything

which I predicted about 10 years ago --diesels can never be as clean as a well sorted petrol engine --diesels are on the way out -except for trucks

Thanks for the replies, i will pick a 13 X 59 gearbox then, my main concern was mileage and how different would the car pick up speed. So i guess it will be a worthy upgrade.
Cheers.

And 1.1 boxes too as they were cheap n easy to find.

I did it in mine and you're right it was awful at 60ish, so I always used to cruise at a higher speed where it wasn't as droney!
