Key Ignitiion Positions?

If I insert my key and rotate it to position 2 (I 3 think starts the engine), the following lights are lit on the dashboard:
Handbrake (expected)
Battery
Engine
(Light icons confirmed using this page (http://www.diagnostic-world.com/pages/saxo_dash_lights_198692.cfm).)

Is position 2 the right position to be checking warning lights, or are they always lit up when the key is there?

(MOT due in early April so no big deal if work needs doing.)

(Can't edit first post.)
I waited 2 two then tried again.
Lights that come are:
Handbrake.
Engine (Management).
Oil. (Was there earlier too, I just forgot to mention it.)
Battery.

Starting the engine results in all the lights going out after a few seconds with Engine Management being the last to go out.
