Hey guys,

Bought a little quicksilver the other day, 106owners seems dead (literally, I registered and then the site went down).

Used to have a VTS many moons ago, and well the cars are similar so thought I would register here :)

It's in my garage atm doing a few little jobs here and there. Thought I would register and say hello.

Here's a few piccies:

Welcome along Steve!

Sadly, 106owners is as you put it, dead. This place unfortunately is going the same way :(

Lovely looking 106 you have there. I love the colour!

Have you done all the work yourself or have you bought it that way? You should look into putting up a progress thread for the car. Would like to see more of it.

Shannon.

Hey Shannon, thanks for saying Hi and the compliment :)

Shame about the forums :( There are still plenty registered on the road, although a rare sight around these parts (both the saxo and the 106).

I was looking for a little fun retro 80's or 90's toy, I miss my youth (38 this year) and my daily driver is a lazy auto clk55. We also have an abarth 500, but I don't really play with that as it's the missus car, so I badly needed a little 80's or 90's hot hatch to put in the garage and play with :)

I am also planning on doing a couple of track days, although now I have the little beast, I am so fond of the cute little thing, I find myself not wanting to rant it around a track!

The quiksilver already had the work done so far, pretty much sorted to be honest. It was built by a chap who has a garage building project and track cars for people. He compete's in retro drift challenges in his custom 100e, he built this and sprayed it in the same colour, but decided FWD was not for him after two track days and so decided to part ways.

It's a pretty good spec:

- 106 quiksilver shell (non ABS, no aircon etc) still with elec PAS
- SRS system totally removed, as well as central locking, and rear partially stripped (seats, fixings etc removed), rear wiper + motor etc all removed
- FK bucket seats with Sparco 4 points, OMP and Torque seat mounts
- Bilstein shocks all round (B6 or B8 will have to check), sports springs
- Rebuilt GTI disc rear beam, Aibach ARB's
- Berlingo front brake set up, all discs new with Green stuff pads
- Team Dynamic 15" rims, with Yoko S drives (195 45 r15)
- Rebuilt J4 bottom end, JP4 head, J4 cams / pulleys
- Induction, 4 branch, decat, stainless straight to rear
- Larger injectors (I forget from which model) with aftermarket fuel pump and unlocked GTI ECU with GTI loom
- Strut brace and some carbon dress up bits / covers, carbon bumper intake vents
- Aftermarket leather dished wheel, B&M short shifter with rose jointed adjustable shift rods and uprated clutch
- Group B mounts, pollybushed
- recent drive shafts, suspension arms, handbrake cable, and other misc bits
- Standard Quiky kit with GTI bumper, wind deflectors and tints for that stealthy look
- Respray with glass out and shuts done in battleship grey
- Samco hoses all over for fluids, GTI clocks, just had new shiny RAD, thermostat and engine coolant put in

Maybe a few other things I have missed, dynod at 139 without remap just timed up.

Interior was a little dirty and tatty, have scrubbed out and cleaned up the carpets / seats, and interior trim. Repaired heater vents and leccy window switch mount. Re-routed a few bits in the engine bay and general tidying up a few things. The driver seat also was a little too far back, so had to re-drill outer rails to mount it another click forward and it's perfect now.

Body is good, very good actually, but one small hole on the inner nearside arch, going to cut that out and weld a small plate in, other than that it seems pretty rust free (which is why he used the shell to start for the build).

One problem though, on re-mounting the seat rails and seat, the front left captive nut for the floor mounting came lose underneath doh! So have to get it on the ramps later this week and take the tunnel shield off on the underside and tack it back on.

Seems to run well, pulls well, noisy though! Seems to also have a 90's fuel gauge a tenner gets you half a tank and it stays around there until it decides it's nearly empty lol.

I have noticed sometime the clutch seems very low, and other times it's just right, I guess I can blame that on the auto adjusting cable, probably will strip that out and fit a manual one at some point. It also not easy to drive with size 12 boots!

Only other thing is sometimes the revs stay a little high when coming to a stop, a quick blip of the throttle and it sets down, and it doesn't do it often, I'd guess temp sensor or AIC valve, I'll probably just switch them out in the next couple of weeks.

Other than that, that's it for now :)

Retro 90's french hot hatch goodness and fun! Would be interesting to weight it, I think the quiky's were 820kg, with some stripage but addition of the extra few kg's for the 1600 and disc conversion etc maybe I guess would be similar to stock quiky weight but with the extra poke. I'll weigh bridge it at some point.

How's your motors?

Cheers,

Oh you aren't far from me either, I'm in Swindon :)

Oh yes, also, managed to get insurance with Greenlight, engine conversion and all mods declared for £248 fully comp and zero excess. Not bad, same sort of price as my merc, but considering it's probably quite a high risk car and all the mods that's pretty good I think.

Sounds a right little pocket rocket! How much did you pick it up for if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks :) It goes pretty well looking forward to a track day in the summer now.

Chap who built the car had it up for 2k, I got it for £1850 which I thought was a bargain with all the new bits.

There are some jobs that need doing though, but just bits and bobs here and there. I'd guess I'll be spending a few hundred tidying it up so not too bad. It's in the garage at the moment, just cutting out the inner wing under the fuse box to weld a new panel in to stop it rotting as there were a couple of holes in there (likely due to not running arch liners), the remaining interior (dash, clocks etc) were poorly fitted back in and bits broken here and there, sorting out a little rust on one of the front rails, tidying up and re-routing some of the loom and wrapping it. Mechanically it's good, the engine, suspension, brakes are all spot on, but inside it's kind of thrown together. I know it is primarily a toy and to be tracked a few times a year but I still want it nice and tidy :)

I do need to refit the sump this weekend actually as well, the liquid gasket that was recently fitted hasn't quite compressed out on one corner so I've got a small oil leak.

A few weekends work and it should be back on the road and ready for the summer :drink:

On another note, do you chaps think I should remove the tints in the rear? Normally I am not a fan and any other car that had it I rip it off, but with it stripped out and looking like a track car, I thought it might be more stealthy like it? So they kind of server a purpose, but I do not want people thinking I have done it to look 'gangsta' or the like! Not sure which looks less rice, seeing the harnesses and metal inside or not seeing in. As it's primarily a toy and track car that won't matter so much, but I will be using it to nip around in as well to keep mileage on my other motor down and also to keep it running and used so things don't seize when it's not in use.

Cheers,

Steve

Damn dude, your car looks amazing. Love that color.

I have tints in the back of mine, and as I discovered tonight, reversing in the dark with that horrible tinted stuff is near impossible. So I'll definitely be ripping mine out.

Thanks buddy, you should get some pics of your little French motor up :)

Just spent another evening in the garage, stripped out some more un-needed parts, mainly upper seat belts and mountings, seat locking mechs and rear speakers. Also wrapped more wiring and re-routed some of the loom, as well as replacing broken clips and screwing things back together securely.

Pulled the back carpet up on the arches inside and they are good so that's a relief.

Also made up a bracket for some more of the loom at the front and did more wrapping as it was caught behind the glove box and just hanging there.

It does have an eBay stereo in it which is fine, its a cheap light one that you can have radio on or listen to your phone, does the trick. Happy to have some music in there, can't go without it. Just switched out the crappy front speakers that were just rattling and hanging in there by two screws and replaced clips and screws on the front door cards. Going to be keeping these, they don't weigh much at all and still make it practical ish.

Just general sorting and tidying really. Also cleaned out and waxoyld the (non bad) drivers front arch.

Main jobs now are inner arch, front inner seat mount repair and drop the oil and attempt to re seal the sump (I hate using liquid gasket!).

Then it can be tested and go for a spin down the b roads when the sun is out :)

Oh another bonus is my insurance co cover pretty much every track in the UK for £45 a day, pretty food I thought.

Cheers.

Give REIS a call... I bet they'd be able to beat that for you. Buddy who recommended them to me was paying 300/year for his track car, with track coverage included. I pay 450/year with all my rally event cover included! :)

I'll drop them a line, my insurance with all mods declared for road use fully comp is 248, and it's £45 per day for track day when I go atm.
