View Full Version : Trying to identify my engine.

Hello guys,
Some time ago I`ve posted a thread asking for help to identify my saxo's engine. I provided a photo of it and a couple of guys told me it was the vtr 8v engine.
Some time ago I've noticed that the vin points to the 1.4 engine instead. Also my mechanic, while changing the oil told me that it took less oil than a 1.6 usually would (said about engines in general, not saxo specifically). Im confused now, because the car would be kind of too quick for a 1.4 and since i've had the car i was sure it is the 1.6
By looking at pictures of both 1.6 and 1.4 engines i see that they look very simmilar, to me it looks more like the 1.6 but Im not sure I can tell them apart myself and be sure, so Im asking you guys for help again. I assume it might've been swapped at some point.
The car itself is a vts and was first sold in germany, also has abs (euro style vts i guess).
So what can you tell me from looking at the photo? Also, where do i find the engine code? Thanks for help in advance!

Where is it located?
It's under the square (ish) black plastic cover on the left in your pictures.
You might need to unbolt the ECU from the bracket because the label is often on the bottom.

Thanks guys, gonna check on it soon.

Right above the wiper fluid inlet right?
Haven't had a chance to check it yet.
I guess I won't need to disconnect any kind of cables when if I have to unbolt it like you said right? Im worried something might reset/clear the memory if the ECU if I do.
Sorry for asking such basic questions but my car skills are very limited.
At most Im able to fix dents with a toilet plunger + hot glue (srly D:)

You won't kill it, just don't fill it with washer fluid! :-)

So I've read the numbers from the sticker

Seems like the 1.6 8v 98hp indeed. So I guess I can be sure now right?
Also sure that it was swapped if vin points to 1.4?

With the black sealer on the ECU it's probably been opened to have its immobiliser removed so that it will run in a different chassis.

So an engine was taken from another car, and the immobiliser had to be taken out of the ECU so it could run in mine? Understood correctly? D:

Alright, thanks y'all.
Now I need to do some bodywork, crashed it into a dacia logan two months ago :wall:
Seems to be pretty good mechanically apart from weirdly feeling gas pedal (not smooth at all) and a weird metallic sound appearing at random times (couldn't pinpoint where it might be coming from, might be the clutch wearing)
Also sometimes it has unstable rpm on idle, especially when the engine is cold.
It usually goes away after I tap the gas pedal slightly.
For the most part it runs and feels great, passes polak mot, no rust, body damage doesn't look too bad, guess it's worth trying to restore it.
Had it for close to 2 years already, my first car, never had any serious issues with it.
I decided to keep the car for 2-3 years more. Insurance isn't too bad on it and I think I'll be better off making it run perfectly, maybe slightly modifying it (basic breathing mods etc) and leaving it for my parents when I get a 'proper' car.
I'll always have a cool little backup saxo.
Im just afraid I'll get into it too much and spend a shitton of cash on it D:
Got alot of reading and messing around with basic repairs and maintenance to do now so I can learn how to work on it I guess.
