X-reg Saxo diesel is creaking/knocking from os front wheel and trying to get to bottom of problem. I've done this so far:

Wheel bearing was droning so garage replaced it.

Car came back with a creak/knock when driving slowly so I took it back.

They fitted another bearing but said there is only one type of bearing that fits my car so it can't be the wrong one, so must have been faulty.

Creak/knock continued so I ordered a driveshaft from GSF (choice of only one type) and had garage fit it.

Creak/knock disappears.

2 months later car goes for MOT and fails on os front wheel bearing (too much play)

Took car back to mechanic, who tightened bearing. Creak/knock returns but car passes MOT retest.

I've now read there are different bearings, different driveshafts and different hubs. Can anyone tell me what I need? I suspect wrong type of bearing but will my new driveshaft fit the other type? Any advice would be great! Thanks.

Okay there is only one type of bearing that will fit. Being an X reg it's probably the non taper type. The driveshafts and the hub MUST match. I suspect you've bought the wrong driveshaft. Take the wheel off and look at the hub that the brake disc sits on. If there are bulges at the back where the bolt holes are, you have a non taper hub. Thus means you need an early type non taper driveshaft. The wheel bearings are non adjustable. It's physically impossible to tighten them up using the hub nut. That's how you strip threads. Sounds like your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing.

It's physically impossible to tighten them up using the hub nut. .

its totally possible if the nut was not torqued correctly and its come loose.

Thanks for your reply. My thinking is though, why did it make the same creak/knock before the driveshaft was changed? Surely that rules out the driveshaft?

The nut must have been hand tight then. Did one of mine up by hand once and it never cam untorqued or falied. Unless I'm he-man :homme:

Could the wrong bearing have been fitted or is that impossible? Is there a chance it could be the brake caliper? Anyone?

The wrong bearing isn't possible. the inner diameters are different. Bearing always matches hub. :y:

Would be a bit odd for it to be a brake issue. do the brakes feel smooth?

So this creak/rumble is only at low speed? going straight?

Yeah, brakes are smooth - has had new pads and discs 6 months ago. Grinding/creak/knock heard at low speeds, usually when pulling up slowly, going straight.
