I've heard of plans by the government to do with the future of tax bands for cars and 4x4, and was wondering what people think of the proposals.

The main plan is to introduce a new band for 4x4s which will be that owners will have to pay £1000 per year road tax, unless they can prove that they NEED the vehicle, for uses like farming or accessing very remote and otherwise really difficult areas. In these cases, tax will remain the same.

Therefore, all mums doing school runs, execs, flash gits etc will HAVE to pay the £1000 per year or get rid of the vehicle.

Good move, I say. Bloody ridiculous vehicles, most of them. They take up more than a normal size space in on-street parking, use bigger tyres so increase the wear and tear on all roads and ujse more fuel, therefore increasing pollution.

I really hope this plan goes through Parliament, cos I HATE OFF-ROADERS which never go off-road.

Others' opinions, please.

Actually, if those who earn bigger money want to, they can pay the £1000 tax, but its actually a way of decreasing pollution caused by these over-sized vehicles. And at the same time, raising money for the government from those that have more money than sense, ie, all those "school-run mums" etc who will still fork out for it.

You don't have to be wealthy to drive a 4x4. There's masses of them for sale around my area for £2000 and up. That's why there are so many floating about - they're very cheap now. Driven by tossers who want to look "important" in their penis extensions.

you will have to pay!

i think tax should be down to how much you earn, footballers pay same rate as tax as me and they are on 50k a week, some on 3 times as much

Bull.

People moan about equality, everyone should pay the same.

If you earn big money, you deserve it, you have worked hard in life. and because of it you get raped and pay 50% tax. and they pay for it in alot more ways than that.

It really does my tree in

Matt you earn over 30k a year??
Over 30k you pay 40% tax at the minute so a footballer earning 100k per week "should" get taxed 40k.
Majority of people are taxed around 22% IIRC.

Yeah, that's about right, I think it's either 22 or 23%, can never remember which.

You dont get taxed the same as footballers at all ...

Erm, no, I didn't say I pay the same tax as footballers. I didn't say I was in the same band, either.

I was simply stating the amount of tax which I pay, personally, which is either 22 or 23% of my income. And as for having it easy - when you start earning enough money to be in the band which pays 40% tax, trust me, you DO have it easier. But them that do, are earning it, so they deserve it. You get nowt for nowt.

To be honest i wouldnt care about paying my £110 annual car tax fee if for once they'd use the money for what it should be for and keep Britains roads safe and resurfaced properly, thats tarmac to fill the holes in the road and not the cheap crap pebbles that do sod all but scratch and mark paintwork.

Notice you never ever see a survey or statistics displaying how many accidents are or could be due to crap road surfaces

Sounds good to me but that extra money should ONLY go on improving the roads!
Some of the roads are terrible around my end, my car gets battered by it the c*nts!

i agree with it, people who can afford to run the big cars shud pay for it. as with people who can run big engined cars, they shud expect higher petrol costs...

and i dont see the point of a 4x4 unless thats exactly what u use it for...!

footballers havent had a hard days work ever.

with tax, if you earn a little money a week you dont notice it, if you earn shit loads you wont notice it, but when your earning around 250-500 a week the tax will hit you, it will take a big chunk of your wages

my mates set up his own business, works 6 sometimes 7 days a week, works well over 10 hours a day, i dont think there are many people who can say that they work harder than him or more than him, he gets raped by tax which i dont think is fair

i personally think it should be down to how much you earn to how much tax you pay

you only pay 50% on any earnings over 28 grand, the first 28k is taxed at the normal rate. hardly hard done by.

I think a few people are confusing the unecessary increase in pollution these vehicles cause with peoples earnings... It's a thread about car tax not income tax, two separate thing so stick to what the thread is on about. I mean that is a happy happy way - im never get irrate by these things :) just its an interesting thread :):):):)

Personally I hate 4x4's... In a society where we are suppose to be ever increasingly aware of how our combined actions are having a dramatic effect on our way of life( ie. global warming, oil availability etc). we increasingly see these things on our roads.
The introduction of the Porsce Cayenne did it for me, I doubt 99% of these on the roads go anywhere near a grassy, muddy hill.

whats more is if these things crash into an smaller car or a pedestrian then the chances of survival are lower for the person at the receiving end. The bumper is higher up and at a height similar to a drivers head. For a pedestrian where talking about a blow to the torso - where almost all the major organs are located.

Should be taxed £2k a year a reckon.

i think the two are kind of linked, if you can afford to buy a range rover sport i think you should be happy to contribute your £1000 tax to go towards helping the economy.

i hate them, by the way :)

was just clearing up confusion on income tax in my above post :)

Well basically tax is took on the wage you earn its a percentage of whatever you earn i currently would be in the 40% tax bracket however because im a contractor i can set up a composite company allowing me to only pay 19% plus a £25 a week administration fee. In wich sometimes i am required to work 7 days a week at 12 hours a day for upto anything like 8-12 weeks alot of people work these hours cause of cost of living these days everyone has a choice to how long they work and how many hours, the likes of footballers also have this option of setting up this sort of company via a agencie so they pay less tax. i suppose the point im getting at is if i earned £1000 a week and payed £400 tax and cleared £600 for that week it wouldnt be like the footballer who earned 50,000 and payed 20,000 in tax he payed a hell of alot more than me didnt he so therefore you are paying to what you earn.

Barry123
24th September 2006, 09:19
doesnt work quite like that.

First £5000 earn is tax free
next £2000 is at 10%
next £25000 is at 22%
anything above that is taxed at 40%

so as you earn more the percentage of what you take home is reduced.
hence the footballers with their greedy little fingers will earn (if they even pay full rate tax) as a percentage a lot less than someone on £40k a year.

stiffler69
24th September 2006, 09:24
Thats not really accuarate mate cause your tax year goes on the previous year so whatever you earned that year they will put you in that tax bracket for the next year that would work for your first year of working but after that throw it out of the window or have a stint on the dole and get a tax rebate
