How old are you?

I'd recommend a 1.1 as when i looked through some of the insurance posts some people are paying over £1000 at 17 for a 1.1

After a couple of bump free years get a 1.4/VTR.

Then after a few more years (4 years NCB) get the BMW 5 series!

1.5d, if you have to have a slow one, make it a cheap one to run

I couldn't bare to spend more than £1000 on insurance.
buy the crappiest car you get, insure 3rd party, build up those NCB's.
1.5D, engine will last forever if you look after it. but wont do you much good in the saxp street cred ratings
1.0/1.1 cheaper on insurance (strangely) than 1.5D and common. so cheapy cheapy to buy a reasonable condition beasty.
1.4 - if you must
1.6 8v - if you must and you have lots of dollar
1.6 16v - if you're on crack.

Mines only £800 TPFT on a VTR and I'm only 18. Just depends on how much you want to spend really.

Plus I'm on my own insurance ;)
