View Full Version : What do I buy? *CHOICE*
Karl
28th September 2006, 11:18
I have up to 3k to spend.
I drive to work (motorway miles) 26 miles a day and enjoy driving my car @ night with friends. So on average I do about 8-12,000 miles a yr.
Heres the choice:
Saxo VTS mk2 (lowest mileage of the 3 - newest registration too)
Pug 106 GTi (Dont get as lower miles or newness for the same price as a Sax)
Starlet GT Turbo (Turbo - reliable or not?)
I'm 18 nrly 19
Insurance Quotes:
VTS - $1229 Admiral $1251 Bell.co.uk
GTi - $1108 Admiral $1105 Bell.co.uk
GT Turbo - $1123 Admiral $1195 Bell.co.uk
post what you think...
<3 Starlet GT Turbo's in White though.
Starlet also has the most performance mods easily available as it is already Turbo'd. but I dont know how un-reliable it will be?

all three are crap, why not go for a standard classy car.......like a audi A3. you then know u have style class and a fucking good car......means u have to save a little more but in the long run u will be much better off!!!!

I drove an A3 once and nearly fell asleep.
VTS. Cheaper than the 106. Though if you can get a deal on a good 106, go for it

I'd go for the starlet mate. at the end of the day you'll be driving it so get something you want. just be prepared for things to go wrong
kingkarl
28th September 2006, 11:28
dont listen 2 him. a3 wen ur 19 ur talkin rubbish m8, if i was you m8 i would go for a vts cuz the gti and becomim quite popular, and i dont knw about the starlet, its old isnt it? have they been well looked after?
DarylVTR
28th September 2006, 11:29
Id say the VTS although be very careful with what your buying as they have often been thrashed and give you 1001 problems but then again thats the same with any car i guess.
Can you efford the insurance / petrol on a VTS? i cant get insured on a VTS and im 19 with 2 years ncb!!
Leo
28th September 2006, 11:30
out of the 3 id go for the gti although i know nothing about the scarlet but not too keen on the looks. is there any more cars you have looked into? golf gti? civic vti? etc

ok you can get insurance but it isnt cheap.........
I wouldnt go third party fire and theft again.
VTS's are very fast but entail all the problems of a saxo , i.e rattly as fuck, weak engines etc.
Id prob go for the 106 GTI as you get goodies like leather interior and they are less common.

28th September 2006, 11:45
gti or starlet for me
sean_rae
28th September 2006, 11:47
i would probly pick the 106 GTi for the same reson as darylVTR half leather trim and there isnt as many GTi'sas the sax, plus they hold there price stupidly well, but you dont get a sun roof!
but the do have all the problems as a VTs as there the same car realy !
Karl
28th September 2006, 11:48
yes I can afford the insurance, infact when I use confused It is like $50 difference between a Sax 1.1 desire and a VTS :p
Starlet Is Turb'd so; that is ideally what I want.
However so is a new car...
Starlet is grp 11 insurance which is k..
but where its a turb, unreliable?
106 GTi just seems to pricey for EXACTLY the same car as an S

Trust me find a reliable car stick some huge rims on it and your sorted.....but hey choice is yours
Karl
28th September 2006, 12:36

I take it you drive an A3?
Karl

:)
lovinmysaxo
28th September 2006, 12:49
i bought it coz it was cheap.....dont have it any more though...as u age the reasons for tuning your car seem to diminish......and yes i now drive an A3.
And just to clarify things, yes this is my meaning and the reason being it all costs money.....so why waste your money on something u will sell over 2 years time?? like i satarted to say at the begining buy a decent car (dont haveto be an A3) but something that will last.....and stick some wheels on it. And yeah wheels....they make a standard car stand out!!!! So now u can all see my point of view.....agree/disagree dont bother me too much.!!!

just try not to be so aggressive and calling other cars "shit" etc, its bound to cause arguments mate.

28th September 2006, 12:52
oh yeah that pic of a Starlet is the Starlet Glanza turb 95 and onwards, I thinks I would be getting the older version? cheaper and not restricted through first and second gear.

fuck off the saxo site then lovin my saxo , whats the point in slating the saxo on a saxo owners club website, have a look around mate and see if you can find a cammed up vts or gti
mods like that insurance companys dont really need to knoe about they aint gonna disect it if u write it off, but its up to you
id go with the gti but only cuz i have a saxo now and fancy a change
Karl
28th September 2006, 12:55

106s are alot more than Saxos :/ dont get where he got that info from.

My VTS has done around 27k this year and a bunch of track sessions. Its had a couple of minor faults, nothing more than the average though. A VTS is a faster car than every A3 upto the S3 and more exciting to drive than all of them (S3 is a dull car. Fact)
While I see the appeal of an A3 as a daily car to go to work in, its not a car to drive. You can bung some big wheels on it and then it won't ride well and loose all its refinment, which is the only thing it ever had going for it in the first place.
Your choice is either the starlet, a Mk2 Y plate VTS or an early 106 GTI. The only one out of them I'd go near is the VTS

serious, non of u are getting the point. The saxo although it looks nice...it drives like a 25 year old bus and the problems u get with them cost u the world to get fixed!! Can non of u seem to grasp that point?? I mean how many times have we heard someone on here say "hey there is something wrong with my saxo" ?? or "oh the insurance on the VTS/VTR is to much so i had to go for the 1.1 version" Why fork out so much money then if u all know there are gonna be problems?? Stick to a good car something reliable!!!

But there are also people on the site that have not had many problems with them. My VTR was fine when I had that, all that needed over the year of ownership was a new coil pack.
Only thing to go wrong with my GTi so far is the front ABS sensors.
I kind of get what you mean, they are known for issues but tbh if you treat them with care you only get the same back.
And handling like a bus, sorry but IMO thats just silly, ive driven quite a few cars now modded and not modded. At Bus would definatly be the NEW corsa, they handle like shit. Saxos/106s (sportier models) do whether you like it or not handle extremly well.

if i was 65 and had grandkids then that would be a good idea, but seein as they are a fun, nippy sporty hatch thats what we all buy into, not every1 can afford a german car, and if it breaks and we fix it, you get a sense of self achievemnt to add to the daily fun we get out of driving our saxo's
and the saxo looks much nicer too if you ask me

And serious chris_VTS u really do need to get some verbal skills, your half cocked comments really bore me.....so please do as i do and be sociable!! We can all get there in the end...i mean i am a good example:D

cant see why people are rippin audi a3's if i had a choice of putting my money on into a vts or audi a3, black top of the rang model/engine, i would jummmmmp at the chance,
not been daft mate but asking on a saxo forum what car to pick ur bound to get people saying saxo, obviously, its down to what you think looks best, take into account reliability, whats the point in having a fast car but fixiing it every week, i would get the starlet if u cud get insured be DIFFERENT, how many saxo and pugs are driving about on the roads they all look the same bar a tiny badge saying vts or gti, i think the starlet looks good,

are you for real! doesnt state it cost the same, it says if i was to put my money into a vts or audi id jump at the audi, ok for a begginer it means that if i had enough funds i would invest in an audi wouldnt waste it on the vts

they are a little bit better built than the saxo and look better (thats why i'm getting one after i've got rid of my saxo)
i'd go for the gti or starlet mate,if you take some time and look really hard you could probally find a good gti for about the same money as a vts they do pop up now and again
as for the starlet if i was going to buy a turbo car i'd wait a few more years and get something with atleast 200 bhp to start with but thats my opinion
