If I got this wrong, please delete this!

Text talk is forbidden here, text talk for example: Later Lta

But word shortening like, In my opinion IMO seems to be fine?

Just wondering what the difference is? I don't use Txt Tlk but can clearly understand it and really doesn't bother me. I know about the non-english members issue, but surely IMO (first time seen) is harder to click onto then Lta (first time seen)

So whats the difference? Thanks

Sorry if this is a bit of a shit thread

short words are used by everybody really not just English people. So if you struggle to know what it means, your clearly not a big enough dork to know.

bt txt tlk is just stupid.

You dont have a certain reply length on forums as you do on mobiles. hence why u need to shorten the words.

Ah I see, its just not long ago i had to ask what IMO was, also some now i still dont know what they are - just seems like the same issue either way depending on the persons internet use

There are certain conventions that are widely used on the Internet. TLAs and ETLAs (Three-Letter Acronymns and Extended Three-Letter Acronyms).

e.g.
IMO / IMHO = In My Opinion / In My Humble Opinion
BBL / BRB = Be Back Later / Be Right Back
FUBAR = F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition
etc...

TLAs and ETLAs have been around on the Internet from the early days and are a widely understood aid to communication - the same is true with smilies.

Txt-talk however is... (how can I put this)

cn u c da wrdz? gr8 init! I luv txt-spk cuz I is kewl.

... a lazy approach to the language. Difficult (but not impossible) for native English readers to decipher, but practically unintelligable for anyone else.

TLAs and ETLAs are based on convention, whereas txt-talk is just removing letters from words.

would / wood / wud / wd

You get my drift..?

Yeh I requested this thread be deleted about 5 mins ago. I get it now, just didn't realise how out of hand text talk got to be honest (dont see it often, etc)

Seeing that:

cn u c da wrdz? gr8 init! I luv txt-spk cuz I is kewl.

Eeeek

I think this thread is important because it addresses the difference between txt-spk and TLAs.

If people want to continue the 'debate'... no more txt-spk please - it hurts my head. ;)

i`v also wondered this aswell because i think imo, lol etc. are harder to understand than text talk, but that`s just my opinion. text talk can get bad sometimes as there`s so many variations of it.
