Nice cam, the saxos will look good through that, did your lack of ability to remove the tooth cause you to pull this face?

thanks man!
basically I've noticed that the ISO speed (or the equivalent digital version) has a very significant impact of the quality of the image. like when you increase the volume (increase the gain) the volume will eventually distort. same with a camera... increase the ISO (increase the gain) the image becomes grainy and rough.

So i selected the lowest iso speed i could... as a result this meant i had to increase the exposure (resulting in about 20secs - as it was very dark) as a result i had to rest the camera on the kerb (i left my tripod at home). also i selected the highest aperature f2.8 to give a narrow depth of field - but also to keep the exposure time within a sensible amount :)

hope that helps :)

you know your stuff dude... which doesnt surprise me as your pictures are often excellent.

I have a 550EX (flash) working its way to me as well :)

Cool. 10Ds produce very nice colours - enjoy.

Get yourself a Stofen Diffuser for the 550 as well. It's a plastic 'box' that goes on the head of the flash and softens it, good for taking photos of people, good thing about flash guns is you can bounce them off the ceiling and get a much more natural illumination, rather than an a harshly lit shot.

For long shutter landscapes like the one you posted, use a smaller aperture. Landscapes are best shot with more depth of field.

will do... thats my only problem... i did try with a great depth of field but the camera was having none of it... 30secs exposure is the longest before jumping on to the 'bulb' setting... at that point i would be guessing how long to have the shutter open. practice time i think :)

I will look into the diffuser for the flash thanks man :Y:

Just out of interest macro lens and telephoto lenses what would be your recommendation (in terms of value for money (im a student :P))

I'll jump on ebay after your recommendations :)

cheers man!

This is the Stofen on my 430EX. I never go anywhere without all my kit these days. Weird eh.

Hand-held that shot, at 1/13s as well!

Macro - any of the Canon or Sigma jobs, just don't get an EF-S 60mm, it's not compatible with your 10D.

Same goes for the zooms, £100 ish gets you a Canon 75-300, which is reasonable. The Sigma 70-300 APO DG is fair as well. Just don't expect mindblowing results straight away with them. Will be different with the macro lenses though, the dedicated macro lenses are all shit hot. But use a tripod. 1:1 magnification will show up any movement in the camera massively!

glad you mentioned that... i was looking at the EF-S 60mm :P

thanks for your help dave - its much appreciated :)

DaveG

No probs man.

I think Canon and Sigma both make 50mm dedicated macro lenses.

Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro about £200 so good value, 70mm about £300, 105mm about £280.

Canon do a 50 which is about the same and a 100 which is a bit more dosh at £400 +/-

Some of the Sigma zooms have a "macro" function, it's not a true macro function, just a button to push that makes their minimum focal length less.

there is a cheap mod you do for your flashgun, to get the same effect if you dont wanna pay out for a diffuser and that is to get a white slighty opaque film canister, cut the bottom off and take a strip out of it and tape it on it will do the same
heres what i mean (*cough rep cough* lol)

i did try with a great depth of field but the camera was having none of it...

also you will find if you use a smaller aperture( higher f number) like f22 not only will you get an increase in the depth of field but it will give you a nice starburst effect on street lights.
