however; once i click buy it now and give my cards details over.
will i be insured there and then?

When you click on buy, it takes you to another page asking when you want it to start.

I did this with elephant.

but is it valid straight away; or do they ring you to confirm or?

I did mine with bell, you have to wait for them to send you a letter stating you are insured before you drive man. Its the law i heard a birdy say. 'Temporey certificate of motor insurance' is what its called,

So no you wont be valid straight away. It will take about 4 days to a week.

I went online with tesco..

Got to the final page after the credit details etc and they said they would send me an activation letter.. up to 7 working days to be delivered, this letter told me when my insurance was valid.. until the date it would run out..

However, i'm not sure if every insurance company does this..
