Does anyone do this?
I have been asked to go to France snowboarding in March and i really fancy it.
Iv wanted to start an extreme sport again for about the last year and ever since the indoor snow dome opened iv always wanted to give it bash.
I would like to go as iv never been on a winter holiday and think it wil be a massive difference. I wouldnt mind just going to have the holiday but all of them will be off everyday boarding or sking so i might aswell take this time to start the hobby iv been looking at for some time...
Few questions...
How many hours of learning would you suggest i get in before going?
What are winter holidays like?
If youv been on one and have some pictures host them up, everytime i think about a winter holiday i always think of dumb and dumber.

my missus snapped her leg when she went a few year back. Was on some small stunt ski's and hit dodgy snow. She still goes back and loves it.
Knowiing my luck i will break something.

id go for it leckie, im not too fond of snowboarding, i prefer skiing myself, but the adrenaline rush you get from belting down the hills is amazing. i only dont like snowboarding because i cant turn on them, dont like leaning over lol. if you can skateboard you should be ok, im useless at skateboarding and i struggled boarding.

my brother and all his mates go snowboarding to different places once a year. France year before last, bulgaria (or some other eastern european country) last year, and I think its switzerland this year. i've been invited to go each time but havent had the funds, thinking of going this year.
first time i went, i think they all went out with no expierience and stupidly bought all the kit (which i will be having this year as my brother wants some new stuff) picked it up quite easily and really fun once you get used to it. they went on those ski-mobile things quite alot aswel, got some funny videos from them...
i'l have a word with him later and see what he says

will be able to get the gear cheaper then normal retail prices anyway.
But yeh robs that what i would be looking to do. people who i will be going with go twice a year. I think they are 2 other people who have never done it before who will be going too. But id rather pay the extra over here and get lessons so i can have more fun out there.

Never been on a snowboarding holiday but its on my list of things to do. Iv been snowboarding loads though, we have an artificial slope in edinburgh.
Doesnt take long atall to pick it up. The first time i went by the end of the session i could use the proper stance.
They start you off with both your heels against the slope so u kinda slide with the front of your body facin the way your going. Once you get used to it you try to kinda slalom side to side like that
Then you do the same again but with your toes in the snow so your facing away from the way your going. Then you try slalom like this.
Then you gotta try start on you heels and spin round onto your toes and then back again.
Once you got that down u can start with your chosen foot forwards and practise stopping and controlling your speed and then you will be set to try in some real snow :D:
Easy Peasy :P

What are winter holidays like?
Everyone is different and it takes different amounts of time to learn.
Sort your lessons out when you get there with ESF (if in france) and book at least 6hours worth to start, prehaps 4hrs first day, 2hrs in the morning 2nd day and then see how you feel. The smaller the group you are in the better the tuition. After 6 hours take a view on whether you want to get the practice in on your own or get and instructor one on one, or in a group.
It takes a while to get the hang of it, esp snowboarding.
If you have, roller skatered, ice skated, skate boarded, surfed or any similar sports before and you where good / reasonable at it then you will improve quicker, all about balance.
Skiiing is easier to get going on.
Winter holidays are blooming awsome! Go skiing pretty much every year now, think this December will be my 11th week at it, so getting there now. I ski not board, have tried boarding and was ok (ish) but it was annoying not being able to do everything that i used to be able to on ski's.
The evening apres ski activity is always a good crack too. You will find plenty of bars, bowling, skating, bum boarding, tobogans, snow ball fights, at pretty much every resort.
Where are you going in France?

yeh and if you say that most of them have been out before then its probably best you get some lessons over here so your not left on your own on the kiddy slopes...
;)
ski-blading is also pretty good...

oh, and go to the snow dome every week from now until the holiday if you can afford it, then you wont need to bother with lessons, just take it easy tho when you are on the holiday for the first few days and understand the run colours so you dont go doing a black etc!
If you put the hours in now you will have a much better holiday as you will be able to board with the other more experience chaps a bit more.

Defo go for it mate. I board every week, usually monday morning when its dead. Well at snowdome they say you can learn in five hours, lesson 1+2 together (2hours) lesson 3 on its own(1hour) and 4+5(2hours). I did this years back and yes you are able to snowboard suffiecently, the only way you get better is going on your own, and falling. I used to go every week, but now its making time. Been boarding good year and half now though!
Id agree with Barret, put effort in now and youll make most of your holiday!
I go away to alps in 6 weeks, for first of 2 holidays cant wait!
Hope thats some help!

i would definatly go mate, been a few times and i love it!
As long as you dont mind the cold weather im sure you will too, i dont really think the dry slopes compare to actual snow, so i would also advise some lessons as soon as you get!
I cant really recomend how many because it depends on how quick you learn!
Been to france a few times, but im going to andora snowboarding next year, got some up and coming places so should be a laugh

I went to a place in Italy called summin like Cormeyeur when I was about 13. This was a snowboarding trip with school, and it was one of the best holiday's I've ever been on.
We learnt on a local dry ski slope for about 7 weeks before hand (7 hours). When I got there I found snowboarding on snow was alot easier than it was on the dry ski slope too, so don't worry if you haven't mastered it perfectly before you go.
But yeh, if I had the chance to do it again I definitely would. Something different from just laying about in the sun. Although it is still really sunny :D:

Dave, I bet u learn on Plymouth Dryslope, same as me :P
Learnt whilst I was at Uni, so it was nice and cheap. It is fairly challenging to pick things up (and yourself) at first, but its well worth it. I did 2 years running at Uni, going over to France, so 2 weeks on snow. Absolutely loved it. Prob why I quit my job last year and went and did a season in Val D'Isere! Was so so good, probably some of the best days of my life!
Had a sh*t job, as a kitchen porter, but the hours allowed me to board everyday and party pretty much every nite. Job came with everything paid for, so I actually came back after the season with more money than I went out with :fcuk:
If its ur first time, I wouldn't buy a board, It'll only get trashed. Well my free rental 1 did over the season. Prob all the crazy off piste runs we did.
Just do it. Its amazing. But put the hours in first so u can make the most of the real snow!

The place I went is actually spelt Courmayeur.

Courmayeur looks alright. Not too many runs thou. But the tree's look good for some crazy off piste tree runs:P
Val D'Isere is linked with Tignes, so there's millions of runs. Check this map:
Val D'Isers Piste Map (http://www.valdisere.com/gb/domaine/plan/planpiste.php)
There is just so much to choose from in Val. Did every single run over the season and a lot of un-marked stuff. There's a really good range of terrain and some quality bars and clubs:afro:

Was in Tignes the week before xmas last season. It is a great resort, lots to ski, fave place has to be the 3 valleys so far (merribel etc)

Yeah, the three Valley's rule. Have spent a week there, and didn't cover nearly half of the runs. Some good board parks to play in too.
If u had been in Tignes on Christmas Day, u may have been lucky enuff to see the whole of my hotel work force boardin/sking naked! It was cold, honest.
