Cruisers around yorkshire are getting more and more police attention. Plod turned up at a cruise the other day and took the numberplate of every car leaving the area. Quote plod "Every single car owner will be posted a warning letter telling them that if they attend another illegal cruise or meet within the next 12 months they will have there car confiscated and crushed"
It was a maccy's car park so what happens to customers leaving that had nothing to do with the cruise??
Police Reform act 2002 (http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2002/20030--f.htm)You looking for the 59 a third of the way down the page
SECTION 59
What does it do?
Fundamentally it allows ANY police officer to confiscate a vehicle.
This can be applied in two ways....
Officer A can request that the 'nuisance' activity cease. If it stops, end of.
If it does not stop the officer can either arrange for it to be confiscated, or, if they believe requesting you to stop your activites will not have any effect, they can confiscate it on the spot, by what ever means neccesary to bring an end to the nuisance.
The Police favourite threat is that your vehicle will be confiscated, and crushed. This (as you will see if you read the act) is absolute bollocks! Even the almighty Supt Lawrie Lewis (in charge of traffic for Avon & Somerset) couldn't get the six cars crushed he confiscated after a cruise in Weston-super-mare. To do this the owner has to have several warnings.
Why do they shout about it so much?
Unfortunately too many people believe everything a Police Officer tells them. Not absolutely everything an officer says is 100%! They tell you they'll enforce section 59 and your car can be crushed.... which is true... in effect! But you'll have to be an absolute ass hole for this to happen! ....its just a method of getting everyone to cack their pants and go away quickly! Which because most people know very little about this much rumoured and feared law.... they do!
