Guys,

I really need your help regarding fitness & training in doing the Great North Run.

As part of my work (Morrisons) we have been asked if we could like to do the GNR 2007. As most of you are probably aware, it's the distance of a half marathon (13 miles).

I am been given a quick brief of what to expect, what to do etc but with it been Winter I don't want to be running the streets in the dark? Do you guys think using a treadmill, rowing and bike machine over the winter period will be good enough to get me started?

Thanks in advance.

Probably best you do mate. Haha.

No, I seriously need to do some training at least because 13 mile is a LONG way. Shame Louise won't be able to do it, but they are coming to support me.

Thanks.

I am also doing the GE Capital run in Leeds sometime next year, probably April or May time. That one is also 13 miles.

Don't want to sound like I'm boasting or owt lol but I did it this year and hadn't been running for half a year before and even when I was am not a runner. It probably could have done some damage, but when you get into it the adrenaline of it all keeps you goin and you forget the pain lol.

Just get out and run over the winter tho, it's quite refreshing running on dark cold night, but more fun with someone. Tbh, you can't beat just getting out there, the treadmill isn't really a substitute.

Treadmill, is ok for say 1 short run a week, or prehaps a 5min jog if your feeling stiff. From my marathon training experience, I would not recommend running too far or too long on it as they ripped my feet along.

Get outside and run, in the dark, in the wet, just do it. But make sure you have the right equipment.

Start with correct running trainers, otherwise you are risking damaging your knees, and you will get foot pain also.

Then if running at night, get some for of high vis reflective something. I have a sash, it looks ghey, but better than getting knocked over. Also alwears wear light colours when its dark, less chance of getting knocked over.

Getting knocked over hurts, try and avoid it.

Its winter, so the chances are when you head out for a run its going to be pissing it down! Therefor a jogging jacket is going to be a good buy, something very light weight to keep the water out, and a bit of warmth in, but breathable is the key.

You need to remember Newcastle is a hilly place, so make sure you incorporate plenty of them in your jogging!

All the best for it

i'm going to do the manchester run next year, think it's only 6 miles, but still...

i'm going to start running for like 20 min's in the morning, even tho it'll be cold i like the idea of getting up and going straight for a run in the crisp cold. haha
