Apparently most employers prefer typed as it's more pleasing the eye... but if you've got really neat handwriting I don't see why you shouldn't handwrite it. I would type it though.

Its a mechanics job, doubt they will be impressed by typing ability as most of the paper work done by them is handwritten
also handwritten shows a more personal touch IMO
handwritten I say

typed with a cover letter and a copy of your cv
then id go to the place and ask to speak to the manager and give him it in an a4 envelope as then you can show some of your qualities face to face before hes even seen your cv

if you want to show you care write an over every "i" put a heart where the dot is ha ha ha.
I honestly don't think they will care. Its what is on the sheet, not how its wrote :)

I'd go for hand written on the application with an attached CV & covering letter.
It is common for companies to just bin your application before reading it if its not typed or you've not used black ink etc....but I cant see them being that anal in the mechanical industry.
HOWEVER if your writing looks like a spider had walked arcoss the page with ink on his/her feet then type it up.
