I changed all four to powerful pioneer ones. Sounds wicked even though i got no amp or sub. but i didnt restrict myself, as they got the power for an amp later. Try changing the head unit to more powerful one too. U will find how clear and crisp the sound is with the new speakers aswell. especially the three ways!
Not bad on the prices either

Whats the advantage of removing the rears?

You hear audio better fromt the front than the back. That is how your ears where made

dont you need some 'fill in' at the rear though?
also, what about any back seat passengers? I know the system is not really set up for them but when you do have someone in there it will sound pretty crap with nothing there.

Do your passengers pay to listen to your system? So your cutting budget to your sound to give it to others that dont pay for it.

If you're using a sealed enclosure then I would recommend trying ported before buying an epicentre.

ive decided against the epicenntre now, going for a 12" planet audio big bang sub in a custom box, with a planet audio monoblock amp. definately need the speakers in the doors doing as theres holes in the standard ones!
