who uses de-icer? i try not to use it because i'm told it can damage paintwork??

anyway, while i was scraping my window with my bank card this morning i was wondering if there is something you can put on your window the night before to stop it freezing over.
either a spray, or something you could wipe over the glass. something to repel water or moisture?! it would just save you a few minutes on a morning when its ice cold.

i've no idea if this could even work, nevermind if there is a product out there like it.
has anybody heard of anything like this? you could make a tidy sum i think if you could develop something like this.

*runs off to patent the idea!*

park it in a garage

my mum and dads car lives in the garage :n:

didnt realise there was that night before de-icer stuff. i'll maybe give that a try.

i'm pretty certain excessive use of de-icer can have an impact on paintwork...

isn't there something called rainex? when it's chucking it down with rain you don't have to use your wipers cos the water runs off it so well. don't know if that would work with a frost though.

It can act on you paintwork i believe! I have used night before de-icer before and it worked. But i park the car on the drive and its doesn't freeze over. Although i get up early and start the car so its nice and warm when i get in :P

I just run the engine for 10 mins before I set off on a morning. That usually clears it

dont spray the de icer on your paint work

i think it does do damage as its like antifreeze

get a sheet or car cover on windows

It's a bit like wax for glass. I used to use it on my old car. Get over about 50 on the motorway and there was no need to use my wipers

Its good stuff but doesn't help with the ice. You can get anti fog aswell by the same company which makes the inside of the windows not mist up :)

de-icer rots the seals on your car aswell

much better to put a sheet over it or just scrape the screen and stick your heaters on for 10 mins

i was pretty sure de-icer wasn't too friendly.

i guess that this 'night before' stuff wont be any better?

looks like i'll just be using the old bank card still. it just feels like your fingers are going to drop off they get so cold!

i'll also have to invest in some of that anti-fog stuff. i never touch my window to clear it, i always use the fan, but its constantly got a slight mist on which is a bugger with winter sun.

Best to ask PB about that.

Could you possibly warm a towel with some warm water and rub it over. I know pouring hot water from a kettle clears it but there is a chance that the window can shatter! But if it was on a towel or cloth then could that work a bit better?

a towel with warm water might gently melt the ice yeh, but you'd probably look a clown doing that! i'd end up soaking myself as well or i'd do something else stupid!

i'll get onto PB and see if he has any opinions about 'night before' de-icer

sorry but i find it amusing that people are worried about de-icer damaging your paintwork... aren't you supposed to spray it on your windows when they are icy hahaha :P

on a more serious note I'd check with PB anyway just in case you ever do spray it on your paint by accident

I either put a cover over the top of my car (covering windows) or start the car 15 minutes before I leave.

You can buy sheets to go over the windscreen to stop it freezing over if I remember rightly?

liamk15

remove your windscreen the night before and cuddle up to it in bed.

ive seen people use just normal newpaper to cover there windscreen, duno how effective it is

Use Pre-Icer once you've finished using your car for the night, then it'll be fine in the morning!

And De-Icer is for your windows, not paintwork!!

GreenSaxo

just pour cold tap water on it. . . so easy then just wiper it off...

1. Whilst lying in bed, reach for the keys.
2. Press the single star on the alarm fob
3. Engine is now running, get ready for work
4. Go out to car, its wrm and defrosted.

*all the above are subject to having remote start that has been installed PROPERLY and not by cowboys. (No further comments from me on that one lol)
