This thread has been more popular than I imagined :) In response to the above:

I'm guessing the Exige is twice the price?

The one in the advert isn't the best buy but it is local and its always good to have a look at few before jumping in.

In regards to them all being wank I suppose you just have to take your time and trace the history as best as you can.

In terms of it being ugly I really dont agree with you there and have no idea whats ugly about it?

The red roof and interior isn't the best but like I say its local and its just to get the measure of them if nothing else.

The TT is very nice but its 10k which is Evo/Impreza money alot better buy IMO.

I like the Exige Mucho but they start off at £17500 which is way over the budget.

Insurance shouldn't be a problem on an Elise.

Great handling cars but don't expect to be blown away by it's performance!

I used to have a vx220 and I test drove a few and afew of the elise. vx was way better in every respect!

Bear in mind also that a 1998 Elise will have a rover K series engine which is poo!

I'd look at an imported evo4/5 or something around those lines if you want a fast, good handling car. Either that or save a bit harder and get a newer Elise or a vx220!

I've driven an Elise that looks exactly like that! They look better in the flesh trust me! Very, very noisy! Great handling but the brakes were shockingly bad! Don't know whether that's typical.

If nothing else this is thread has opened up my eyes to the diverse tastes Sax P members have, never before have I heard anyone say the Lotus Elise is ugly/gay/shit and I could never get bord of these rally bred cars such as the Impreza or Evo.

I think a standard vt* would have generated a wealth of praise if was lowered people would have loved it but rather confusingly other more superior cars get slated.

Dont mistake these comments as me caring what people think as ultimately its my money and I will buy what I want but I'm baffled by the harsh criteque some legendary cars have received.

I prefer the look of that shape elise personally. I do really like them, I dunno if I could use one everyday but I would LOVE one as a second car. Especially considering the amount of stuff you can do to them, and the options that you can buy from Lotus themselves (suspension,brakes,engine upgrades).

I love the focus RS as well. Supposed to be the best handling FWD car, I would definitely have one over the Elise as an everyday car. I would also have a one over a Civic Type R as I have been told and have read in several magazines that the steering is over assisted and feels very wooly.

As for impreza's Which shape is a Catalunya? I have a real soft spot for the Bug eye shape and prices seem to be very good since the later shapes came out.

For your budget I would strongly reccomend an Evo 4/5. My ex's brother has an Evo 4 and its a brilliant car. Obviously a little thirsty but VERY VERY fast. Handles brilliantly and I just couldn't believe it was possible for a car to physically grip that much!! It was amazing and i WILL own one some day. They have also come down in price dramatically over the past year.

I suppose at the end of the day its upto how practical you want a car to be.

I'm sacking the lotus off and going for the Impreza option the Catalunya is the "Classic" shape and the Evo 4/5 would be nice but I think the impreza is an easy option as the parts aren't so rare and garages etc wouldn't shit them selves when any work needed doing.

The bug eye is the least favored shape and the second hand prices reflect that but I wouldn't say no ;)

We already have a CTR on the drive and I thought the handling was amazing but do agree it lacks a sense of feeling.

I'm looking at the imports at the moment as I love the 3 door shape

Hmmm I love the classic shape. Would have to be completely devoid of all bodykit though. Just the basic Sti kit and the slightly bigger "hoop" spoiler like is on that Impreza in the link but without the splitter and skirts. Lowered with the Bug eyed shape wheels.

I do like Impreza's. I love the sound. Apparently the use of equal length manifolds creates good bhp gains.
