Right, It's disappeared from My Computer so everytime I put a CD in, it won't load.

Can anyone help to what could be wrong? I think it's the same thing that happened last time, but I can't remember how to sort it.

Have you tried doing a "Scan for new hardware" in device manager but beyond that it could be broke, does it make any noise like it's spinning etc.

Yeah, makes the noise like it's spinning. It's just I really want to install my TomTom software but this error message keeps coming up.

'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'

I'm on Google now, but can't find anything.

try downloadin some new drivers of t'internet

if that doesnt work, try disconnectin the drive (power and IDE) and then turn on. turn straigh back off, and connect up again

then do as previously suggested - scan for hardware!!!

go into start, then run, then press the letter of the drive, followed by a colon then press enter

OR

restart it, then go into bios and see if everything is alright..

Im going to guess that if it isnt showing in My Computer oR been found withnew hardware It will either be shagged, the IDE ribbon has come away from the drive or the cable is faulty. Because the disc is spinning they isnt a power issue.

Maybe try a system restore or check the bios to make sure the drive is enabled.

It's on my laptop, so I can't disconnect any leads.

maybe you have knocked the laptop and the cable and become more and more lose mate.

I had that problem on my old laptop but was a power issue.

Does seem a logical answer.

I think I'll pass my Dad the laptop and let him look. I uninstalled the driver and then re-installed it, but it's still coming up with the same code error.

Don't you just hate computers.

As suggested check the bios.
do you have any bootable discs you can try to boot?
Could be a piece of malware causing problems.
