basically it is the hight of the sidewall mate. if you face the alloy, the sidewall is the bit of the tyre that'll be facing you.

the profile number is given as a percentage of the width of the tyre.

for instance 195/45R15

means the the profile is 45% of 195

which is 87.75

:)

the smaller the profile the lower the sidewall height

ah so the bigger ones stick out, so u dnt curb the alloys as easy? is that right?

good question. i think the low profile ones look better too

the profile of the tyre as explained above by ad bears no relation to how much over hang they might have to protect the alloys. Larger profiles are more comfortable but sacrifice lean in corners

true mate.

I've never seen a 4x4 with kurbed alloys.

Ah right, i'd love some tyres that stick out because i recently hit a curb and cant go over 60mph without the steering wheel shaking like a c**t (big dent in steelies) and power steering got fucked. So i figured id get some alloys

perhaps i misunderstood, yes large profiles would rasie the alloy further from the ground and further from kerbs, sorry my bad.

no i think you understoo right man.

dude you're confused i think... basically if you have massive profiled tyres then you'll get a natural buldge in the sidewall which will aid protection from kurbs...

but really the best thing is not to get into the position where you kurb the mofo's anyway :)
