is there not any way you can hear the engines running? or are they stripped out the cars already?

only thing u can do is trust them, try get a guarantee of some sort, ask where the damage was on the car that it came out of.

Ask to hear the engine running before they take it out of the car.

Its hit and miss with breakers mate. I used to work at a Renault specialists and part of what we did was to break cars for parts. Most of the time the car would be dropped off and stripped there and then, the lump would be taken out and seperated from the gearbox. I think most of the time the engine was deemed 'ok' if the accident damage was to the rear or sides of the car. I cant remember if we ever ran an engine specifically to see if it worked as 9 times out of ten they did anyway. We took a closer look at the engine if it had been a front impact, most of the time the sump is the first to go in accidents, especially if its alloy. Like i say most breakers will have the engines out of the car allready so its hard to see them running.
What you want to do is check that the cam belt hasnt slipped or been damaged if its had a good front ender. You might not be able to see this damage if the covers are still on over the belt but it might be worth looking at it closer if the covers appear cracked or broken.

I must point out that ALL our engines had low mileage :d !! Its a thing most breakers will tell you, use your own judgement and take what they say with a pinch of salt

Are you going to be fitting the engine yourself mate ? You see the thing is if i were you mate and i was going to have the job done i would do it properly. What i mean is if i got my hands on a decent VTS engine i would spend a bit of time on it. There is a lot you can do while the engine is out of the car.

You seriously want to consider having a new head gasket fitted along with a new cam belt before the engine goes into your car. It shouldnt be much extra on top if someone else is doing the work for you and it will give you some peace of mind. It is advisable to use genuine parts when doing this sort of work, they cost a bit extra but you will have less hassel in the long run
